Crossing of Souls

History

The Crossing of Souls takes place every year on Veiltear 26. It is celebrated worldwide and always falls on the second New Moon in Veiltear. On this day, the Veil between the Realm of the Living and the Realm of the Spirits and the Dead is thinnest. This means that spells, such as Speak with Dead, will be easier to use and more effective.

Execution

This day is often used to say goodbye to suddenly deceased relatives and loved ones, however, there are rules in place that only the Spirits of those who have died since the last Crossing of Souls may be contacted. This is to prevent the creation of restless or malicious spirits by continuously contacting and disturbing the same spirit over and over.

Observance

However, the thin veil also makes it easier for driven spirits to cross over to the Mortal Plane, leading to an increase of Specters, Ghosts, and Poltergeists, especially during the third Tenday of Veiltear. In cities and towns with magic users, wards are set up as a protective measure against such spirits. Due to this, it is generally advised to avoid spending the nights of the third Tenday of Veiltear outside of city walls. Those who fail to seek the safety of a place warded against spirits should pay special attention during the night, lest they want to be possessed, or gored by their own weapons.
The Crossing of Souls is celebrated as part of the Ebean Calender.
