Dwarven Tribe of An-Karesh
History
The Dwarven Tribe of An-Karesh make their home in the mountains of the north-easternmost island of Cadalyn. They split from the Al-Karesh tribe of the The Ancient Summit during The Age of Solitude in the year 524, because they disagreed with opening up the gates to non-dwarves. They emigrated to the unnamed Island and have since stayed a close-knit society unwelcoming of strangers.Industry & Trade
Due to their secluded location and limited access to outside resources, each member of their society is specialized in one profession. Young dwarves have a coming-of-age ceremony when they turn 25, which is uncharacteristically young for dwarves. At this ceremony, their future profession is determined based on their aptitude for different skills. The An-Karesh do not care for luxury items and have no use for money, they do their assigned work and in exchange, they receive the goods they need to survive, such as clothes and simple furniture. Food is provided by the cooks at sunrise, noon, and nightfall. Most of the community is present during the meals unless they are impeded by illness or work.
There are many different professions, ensuring the safety and general well-being of their society. Miners, lumberjacks, gatherers, and farmers provide the tribe with basic materials and food. Stonemasons, cooks, and, carpenters process the gathered resources and craft necessities. Midwives, nurses, and apothecaries take care of the young, sick, and disabled. They are also responsible for keeping the dying company and ensuring painless passage to the afterlife, should the need arise. Scholars act as keepers of knowledge, keeping track of things such as family trees, important events - such as the splitting from the main tribe -, where raw materials can be found as well as keeping an exhaustive list of the different plants and creatures found on their island.
Tourism
It is almost unheard of for an An-Karesh Dwarf to venture out of the winding halls and paths of their mountains. Thus, not much is known about this tribe of dwarves outside of their mountain halls. Furthermore, they splite from the main tribe, because they did not want non-dwarves wandering their halls, so they is not tourism to speak of.
Architecture
The halls of the An-Karesh are extensions to the naturally formed caves and have been hewn into the mountain walls. Many of the pathways have been worn smooth by the many dwarves walking them every day. The walls of the pathways winding through the mountains are adorned with intricate carvings and beautifully woven tapestries, depicting some of the Tribe's history.
Little alcoves are dotted along the main paths, offering a small respite for the sick and elderly or those of a weaker physical condition. Due to the limited variety of available resources, much of the furniture is simple and made out of different types of stone.
Geography
The An-Karesh make their home in the extensive halls of the mountains of Cadalyn's north-easternmost island. The island has rocky shores as opposed to sandy beaches. Most of the island is taken up by the mountains. There are, however, some smaller patches of rich soil that are used as farming land for more resilient plants. There is a small bay on the south side that contains the island's only docks.
