Grindylow
Basic Information
Anatomy
Grindylows are small, bipedal creatures. They are amphibious. Due to their webbed hands and feet as well as gills they can travel at great speeds for a long time while in water and generally seem to prefer spending their time in the water.
Their hands have finger-like segregations, resulting in a great amount of dexterity and nimbleness. Their claws and teeth and extremely sharp and strong, allowing them to rend the flesh of their prey in a single swipe and to gnaw bones to the marrow in no time at all.
Biological Traits
Grindylow are considered Beasts.
Genetics and Reproduction
Similar to many aquatic species, female Grindylow lay a clutch of eggs. A single clutch can contain between eight to twenty eggs, which will take an average of two tendays to hatch.
Growth Rate & Stages
Grindlows have a very high metabolism, leading to many of them dying in their infancy. Because Grindylows are born in clutches, there is a lot of competition. The competition paired with the aggressiveness of this species often leads to them cannibalizing each other when they are young.
Ecology and Habitats
Because they lack fur and barely have any blubber, Grindylows prefer warmer waters near coasts. They will try to find small caves to settle in, preferably with direct access to the ocean from the cave, making it easier for them to escape or hide from predators.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Grindylows are carnivorous. Growing up, they have to consume roughly their body weight in food. Once they reach adulthood they need to consume half their body weight in food. With pregnant Grindylows, this increases to about three quarters of their body weight.
They will eat anything they can get their hands on, fish, other smaller aquatic creatures, and occasionally even humans if they wander into Grindylow territory.
Additional Information
Social Structure
Grindylows hunt in small packs of four to five. This allows them to take on bigger prey they would not be able to take down on their own.
They communicate mostly in growls and snarls but can understand Sylvan.
Average Intelligence
The intellect of a Grindylow can be comparable to that of a young child. They are mostly driven by instinct and hunger and have never been observed using tools.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Spending much of their time in murky water, Grindylows have adapted dark vision.
