Wardens of the Wood
"Are you lost, traveler? Do you need a hand?"
The Wardens of the Wood believe that civilization has a place in the world. As a warden, you help others understand nature, ensuring that they don't cause unintentional harm or stumble into danger. Wardens serve as militia and mediators in the Eldeen Reaches. This is the largest of the druidic sects and the most recognized.
Structure
The Wardens are typically organized in tribes of about 20-30. Each tribe is led by a nomarch, who commands and advises the other members. The nomarch is typically the oldest of the tribe, but this is not always the case. Each tribe is their own individual entity, and does not report to any higher structure. Each tribe respects the other as their equal.
Each Warden is identifiable by a green, tree-like symbol inscribed upon their robes. To a lost wanderer seeking asylum, spotting this symbol might be a gift from the gods. To a trespasser wreaking havoc in the Reaches, it may be a condemnation to hell.
Culture
To those who have never entered the Eldeen Reaches or met a Warden thinks the organization to be stoic, disciplined, and observant. This is partially true, but it only speaks to a small side of the Wardens. When something threatens the wilderness, the druids will certainly become formidable foes to that which dares make trouble. However, the Wardens are also friendly, and always eager to teach the ways of nature.
The Wardens of the Wood are the druidic sect most in-tune with what happens in the rest of Khorvaire, since they often act as arbiters and ambassadors between Reachers and the rest of the continent's people. Thus, the have a respect for most, if not all, civilized people. However, there is a tinge of wariness when it comes to civilized folk, as they are the most likely group to damage nature- whether intentional or not.
History
The Wardens were founded in 178 YK when a small group of orcish druids came across a fleeing Aundarian noble. He had been riding with his family in a carriage - for the lightning rail had not yet been created - on the western side of the Wynarn River when his caravan was attacked by bandits. He barely escaped with his life, after watching helplessly as his wife and children were slaughtered by the bandits. And he was next.
The orcish druids immediately tended to the man, listening as best they could through his feverish cries. This great deal of noise attracted the very bandits who were seeking the noble. Instead of the easy catch they had suspected, they met at least a half dozen orcish druids. Life in the unforgiving wilderness had granted the orcs a certain toughness, and they easily dispatched the bandits.
This noble was none other than Prince Maurnal, the nephew of the then-king of Aundair. Once he returned safely to his kingdom, he spread the tale of the generous orcs far and wide. The druids themselves had found their calling: to defend and intercede on behalf of the Eldeen Reaches and those who may enter. Thus, the Wardens of the Wood were born.
