06 Session Report - The Past Becomes the Present
General Summary
Using the tickets provided by Elaydren d'Cannith the party enjoys first class on the two hour Lightning Rail ride to Sharn. The day is spent with Enna trying to wrap her head around the City of Towers and the rest of the group doing some shopping and catching up. Elias tries to track down his old buddy, but the word on the street is that no one has seen him for a little while now. There is no time to dig deeper into this as the party heads up to the middle city to their scheduled meeting with Ronnadin's cousin.
As they make their way through a heavy rain on their way to the Broken Anvil Inn, the group stumbles across the bloody body of someone on one of the countless bridges that spiderweb the city. As they approach, they are attacked without warning by a mysterious warforged. They quickly defeat the assasin as Tilly tries to render aid to the wounded man. He is already dead, so she takes a quick moment to try to learn more about him. A speedy investigation finds a book in a well worn satchel over his shoulder. She barely pockets it before the city guard arrives to see what is going on.
The party explains themselves to the Sgt, a dwarf named Dolom and after he corraberates their story with a few onlookers, he gets their contact information and sends them on their way.
At the Broken Anvil, the party talks to the barkeep who leads them to a private meeting room where Elaydren is already waiting. It isn't long before they realize that the man murdered by the warforged was no other than the other person she was expecting to be here for this meeting. Apparently his name was Geldem and he was a provost at Morgrave University. He had been working with Elaydren to help her recover an House Cannith heirloom and ancient schema, which according to family legends, was locked away in a foundry that dates back to pre-Galifar Sharn. Elaydren's spirits are raised when Tilly shows her the book she recovered from Geldem's body. With the aid of some proprietary House Cannith magic, the dragonmark heir reveals that the blank pages are not at all blank and instead are filled with notes and diagrams. She explains that this is an ancient Cannith journal that Geldem had been trying to decipher and make sense of. And in the back are several folded sheets with his notes.
“The location of the lost foundry is deep within the Dorasharn Tower,” Lady Elaydren proclaims. “Fifty-seven levels below the tower’s present-day sewer system. I offer you one thousand gold pieces and the good will of my house if you recover the heirloom and return it to me. Will you help me?”Some other tidbits from the meeting that went long into the night:
- Who killed Bonal Geldem: A servant of the Lord of Blades. The warforged prophet wants the schema for his own dark purposes.
- Why us: House Cannith’s leadership has been disjointed since the destruction of Cyre. I am loyal to the leader of my portion of the family, which operates out of Aundair. I have nothing against the Sharn-based family, but I am here to further the efforts of Baron Jorlanna d’Cannith of Aundair
- How do we reach the lower levels: This map shows the way to reach the sewers of the Dorasharn Tower. Somewhere beyond the E-213 Valve Cluster you’ll find a sealed door with the same mark as the one on Geldem's journal. Open the seal, and the tunnel beyond will take you to the long forgotten level far below, where the foundry resides.
A circular metal hatch, set into the tunnel wall and engraved with arcane runes, must be the sealed door from the scholar's notes. In the middle of the hatch, a glowing circle of mithral depicts the same icon as on Geldem's journal—the ancient symbol of House Cannith that predates the founding of the Kingdom of Galifar itself, a stylized anvil and hammer.
