The Shadow Schism
The Shadow Schism encapsulates the formation of House Thuranni .
History
During the Last War, House Phiarlan saw that it would be of much use to all parties for an extended period of time. To maintain trust, business and secrecy the House instituted a clause of permanent confidentiality. Any agent contracted out, cannot serve in future against that contractor nor reveal any secrets learned in their employ. While this scheme worked to maintain, and even increase, business it also meant that most House enclaves would have multiple agents all working at cross purposes and potentially trying to spy/thwart each other. Pitting members of the house against each other directly. Inevitably this lead to increasing tensions within the house. The Schism
Viceroy Elar Thuranni d'Phiarlan was a Phiarlan agent employed by Karrnath and The Emerald Claw in the role of Counterintelligence within Karn. In 972 YK Elar coordinated the entirety of the Thuranni family to assassinate every member of another House Phiarlan family, the Paelion family in their main enclave of Regalport. Across Khorvaire, other Thuranni stuck as well, bringing an end to the Paelion line. Such a widespread and brutal series of assassinations had not been seen for decades, and never before within the House. Outraged at the betrayal within House Phiarlan, Baron Elorrenthi d'Phiarlan declared Elar and his family excoriated. Elar, though, did not accept her punishment. Instead, Elar declared the Thuranni bloodline its own house: House Thuranni. Naming himself Baron Elar d'Thuranni, Elar took the contracts that both the Thuranni line and the Paelion line possessed before the schism. This is the officially documented story of the Shadow Schism, although many have pointed out missing information such as the cause for the Paelion family massacre. Baron Elar has claimed to have uncovered a plot hatched by the Paelions to assassinate dragonmarked heirs and kings, and thus attempted to exterminate them. There is a conspiracy that the Shadow Schism was planned and that Baron Elar and Baron Elvinor agreed to split the house and use the Paelions as a scape goat. If this is true, then what could be the reason?
