Session 22, The Day of Long Shadows, 18 Eyre YK
General Summary
Summary:
The party chased Harash through the arcane tunnel carved into the bedrock below Sharn. Occasionally, they encountered strange intersections where several tunnels branched in many directions. Though the party's survival skills and Erisna's sensitivity to extraplanar energy, the party was able to find the right path to pursue Harash and find Cavallah -deceased?-.
After dealing a devastating blow to the gorgon, the party was ambushed by even more of the pale creatures that had been on the fringe of this adventure. They defeated them handily, but the distraction allowed Harash to escape into the final chamber.
When the Sharn Dragons entered the final cavern, they found Harash begging the silent form of Cavallah for assistance. They dealt the killing blow to the gorgon, and then discovered the ruse. Cavallah dropped the silent image of her goblin form, and revealed her true nature to the party. Hovering above the party in her oni form, she struck a mighty blow at the party and almost killed Glittergem before taking the entire party on at once.
After a bloody battle, the tide began to turn against the warlord. She set her final plan into motion by corrupting the mainfest zone in some way the party couldn't ascertain, but was almost killed by Keth as she did so. As she gasped, clutching Keth's sword in her stomach, a set of pale hands reached through the manifest zone and pulled the oni through it. The party immediately noticed a shift in the arcane energy around them. Due to his recent study into the phenomena of manifest zones, Therin deduced that whatever Cavallah was doing was tied to her life force.
Making a fateful decision, Therin urged the party (along with Keth and Tinker to chase Cavallah. Erisna, the last to go through, felt the Mysterious Black Flame Lantern being shoved into her arms as she was shoved through the corrupted crystal. The party landed in Xoriat, The Realm of Madness, and began their search for Cavallah. In the dark kaleidoscope they found a panel that had been peeled back and chased after it.
Emerging into magical darkness, Rare was able to see Cavallah being drug by a blind mind flayer. The creature was blind in the magical darkness, feeling around its surroundings using a black tentacle that seemed grafted to its forearm. Rare fired off a quick Eldritch Blast to seal Cavallah's fate- but alerted the denizens of the realm in the process. As scores of grotesque creatures descended on the party, Glittergem used the Black Flame Lantern to open a portal to another realm, and the group tumbled through.
The people of Sharn felt the ground beneath their feet shake. The magnificent towers emitted an onimous groan, and the shadow of the Skyway began to grow as it plummeted toward the upper city. A dark shadow grew from the lower wards, climbing from the base of the towers and bolstering them against gravity. Finally, the shadow took on the form of a large, fearsome creature with red glowing eyes. This powerful creature shouldered the weight of the Skyway. It held the district in place for several minutes as confused and horrified citizens looked on. Then, as suddenly as it started, the city's towers regained their ability to defy gravity and the Skyway began to float again. The shadow noiselessly crept into the cracks and fissures of the city, causing many to doubt what they saw. Regardless, the people of Sharn kept a day of remembrance on the 18th of Eyre from then onward- as the Day of Long Shadows.
