Session 11: Steal the Dragonshard from the Artificer Blacksmith Report
General Summary
At the dawn of the day, the party goes to Parack's establishment The Fire Spire and discover that among the normal hustle and bustle, that there is clearly more constructs on guard. Being undeterred by this, Miles formally Vincent Zander, heads to the front of the establishment while Donaar Raghthroknaar, Verna Appleblossom, and Wabnuc Thistleden with Pedro head around to the back of the store. The original guard dog is in position as well as a pentadrone nearby.
The party in position tells Miles to start his distraction. Miles earlier pre-gamed for his method acting in where he went to the Fire in the Hole tavern with De Sir E and Oakburn Ravenaxe and got stupidly drunk. He then put on clothing indicative of commoners and did a alter self on him to have the appearance of an individual with a defective robotic prosthetic that needed repair. He then attempted to cause a ruckus by asking for a person to repair his arm at the front desk while asking for his artisan that he could not quite figure out the name to. He spewed out a list of names until he stopped at the name Caleb. When Parack informed him that artisan was not around, Miles started asking for Caleb's mother for whatever reason. Parack under the full assumption that this person was clearly drunk, just ended up politely ignoring Miles and MIles decided to explore the Blacksmith in a futile attempt to cause a scene. Miles would bump into random patrons and say a few nonsensical words and then continue walking on. Miles then attempted to go into the VIP section of the Blacksmith area, in where the constructs promptly stopped him from entering the area. When Miles attempted a pushback, the constructs bopped him on the head doing a few points of non lethal damage. At this point, Miles was relatively discouraged and headed back out to the front entrance.
Meanwhile in the back of the blacksmith's shop, Verna sneaked over to the side of the wall and successfully scaled the wall. The window was partially locked, but she was easily able to pick the lock. Meanwhile, Verna peered into the doorway that was Parack's resident and it seemed to be a foyer with some areas to place coats and outdoor clothing at the front entrance, a carpet laying in the center, and three doors that were all shut that were all going separate directions (Left, Right, Center). Verna turned around a put down a rope so that Wabnuc, Pedro, and Donaar could climb up. Wabnuc and Pedro were able to get to the side of the building with no problem, and Wabnuc was able to scale up the side of the building with no problem. However Wabnuc forgot to tie Pedro to the end of the rope and could not hoist Pedro up. The group decided to contact Miles and up the distraction up at the front in order to distract the construct guards some more.
Hearing this message, Miles continued walking around the front area, poking and prodding some of the constructs in the hopes to rile him up where he finally had some ideas. There was a toilet paper salesman who was looking at the blacksmith goods at the time that he thought might be a good idea to set on fire but as he was walking towards the front he decided that it would be better to self immolate and "tripped and fell" into the front pit of the store front. Miles was using control flames from the fire at the front to give the constant appearance that he was on fire while not actually being on fire. From there the crowd started to gather around him, most of them taking selfies, the rest trying to pat out the fire, while Parack and a few other blacksmiths went to the nearby well to get some water to douse the flames.
This distraction was enough to cause the pentadrone to move from its position in the back and started heading slowly out to the store front. Donaar saw this as an opportunity to sneak over to the rope, tie up Pedro and scale the wall. Or at least that is what he pictured in his mind. On the walk over to the blacksmith's wall Donaar tripped and fell (rolled nat 1 on stealth) causing a huge commotion with all of his plate armor, and causing both the iron defender dogs and the pentadrone to come rushing to the source of the noise. Verna and Wabnuc quickly hoisted up the rope to at least allow for the continued success of the mission. During this time, Donaar was expecting to throw out his "nobility" card but not realizing the constructs were just following particular orders. The pentadrone immediately paralyzed Donaar (he once again rolled a nat 1 on his save) with his spray, shot a net around him and started dragging him towards the town guard. Pedro was left to his own devices, and was left to the dogs who were growling at him. As a defense mechanism, Pedro rolled up into a ball, and the two construct dogs starting using him as a ball and rolled him back and forth and were happily distracted.
At this point, Wabnuc and Verna decided to continue their mission. Verna was able to easily lockpick the front of the entrance and were able to enter the foyer. From there, Verna decided to pick the right door to start exploring for the dragonshard to be replaced. However, as she approached the right door, Wabnuc was completely wrapped with the floor rug and was suffocating! Verna quickly checked the status of the door and rushed over to save her companion. The battle was fierce, Wabnuc almost perished and the rug that tied the room together was destroyed.
Down at the first floor, Donaar was still being dragged by the pentadrone to the guard house and was thinking about all the injustices that this forced captivity was to him. How he was captured for no reason, detained in a manner unbecoming of a noble and was planning on his methods to sue the town and blacksmith into poverty. However, the paralyzing effect finally wore off, and Donaar used his command word to have the pentadrone release him. The construct released Donaar and he just calmly walked away.
Miles was continuing with his ruse of being caught on fire and distracting the nearby customers and workers of the blacksmith shop. Miles then attempted to set the toilet paper salesman on fire, but missed miserably. The salesman realizing that he should not be so close to open flames with his wares, promptly skedaddled. Parack and the other blacksmith's finally came back and doused the flames on Miles and were immediately confused on why he did not have any burn scars, singed clothing and was immediately a different person than before. As you see, Miles was using a spell for his altercation, and lost the ability to concentrate on it while he was splashed with water. One of the customers, who was a town guard, recognized Miles from the wanted posters, and knew that the individual in question was a "known changeling" and promptly went over to arrest Miles. As an act of passive civil disobedience, Miles decided to "go limp" and the towns guard was forced to drag him by his feet to the town guard station (heading towards the same one that Donaar was going to). When Miles and the guard were far enough from the Blacksmith, Miles attempted to throw a net onto the town guard and promptly missed. The guard clearly annoyed decided to hog tie Miles, but failed in the process and Miles was able to squirm and run away from the situation. Then when Miles had enough distance, he decided to alter his appearance again and headed towards the agreed upon meetup point which was the well where they saved Whiskers that cat earlier. Miles was then internally creating a whole matrix of alternate appearances and figuring out how to best convert and change his appearance based on his noterity with that individual.
Once the party met up at the well, they were able to find out how poorly the mission had gone. As a result, they decided to reurn to the Obelisk Hotel and do a long rest.
Since they needed to come up with a new game plan, the party figured that they would do one of the Adventurer's guild quests and decided to clean up the bandit camp in the mean time. Collecting some information within Woodhelm, they were able to determine the approximate area, proof of completion, and Verna was able to scope out the layout of the camp in order to come up with a decent plan of attack. They decided to attack the camp at dusk, but an unexpected group of bandits showed up at the same time, possibly with unknown ties to the bandit camp, increasing the difficulty of the battle.
The battle was relatively simple even with two bandits having balistas that missed the party completely. Miles clearly burning down more trees then taking out enemies, and Donaar was wondering if the party has any battle tactics or capabilities at all as he was taking out the majority of the bandits.
The party allowed one member to escape, with uncertainity if they were going to track that individual and find further bandit camps or if he was truly allowed to escape. They found some merchant chests and explored the contents before ending the session for the night.
