Root

Root

The war that lasted over a hundred years, that pitted machines against each other. It spat out Hacker into a violent battle he was not prepared for.   Waking up weeks after the battle Hacker found that some of his limbs were gone and some of his memory banks were corrupted. The next thing he realized was that he was in a thick tree. Confused and alone he integrated some nearby plant matter into his body to replace his missing limbs, a stump for a leg, and a branch for an arm.   Roaming through the aftermath of the battle he saw that maybe he was the lucky one.   He had been protected from scrappers and thieves by landing in a large and lush oak tree. Wandering he tried to recover his lost memory. He could remember his name, Hacker, and that he was forced to fight for humans.   Forced.   What was this word? Before he only knew he was meant to fight for humans. This new word seemed antagonistic.   And so Root was born. With animosity towards other races (mainly humans) he changed names and roamed the wilderness.   As the years passed his body became more and more made of natural components and he avoided contact with other races at all costs. The ruthless fighting barbarian he once was seemed to connect him to his past and so he chose a different path, a more natural one. His wooden and stone components acted as a natural sponge for the magic of nature and he began to feel at peace.   Having roamed all throughout the land and seen multitudes of beasts of all shapes and sizes he came to realize he was dying. His body was slowly degrading. The magic was fading from his body animating and holding it together. Though not much of a problem now it certainly would be in a few years.   Looking for a master is Warforged construction and magic binding to objects he set out for Sharn. Returning to the world of other creatures did not appeal to him but if he was not there to protect nature who would? Arriving at Sharn from nearby forests Root stepped out reluctantly. The city was so overwhelming and bustling after all these years. To escape the cacophony and people he stumbled into an alley full of trash.   Thinking he was safe he rested against a wall, his cloak made of plant fibers and vines slumping. Suddenly a creature burst forth from the trash yelling and terrifying Root. Stumbling backward he was so overwhelmed his body naturally shut down and went into inactive mode. The young elven boy covered in bits of garbage making him look like some trash creature looked at the strange Warforged had just startled all he could say was "Whoops."   Waking up a minute later to find the trash creature poking him with a large club, Root recoiled, afraid. The boy removed the trash on him to let Root know he was actually an elf. The boy explained his name was Merle and he was sorry, he had just finally found a part he had been searching for weeks to find.   Caught off guard Root just asked the boy where he could find a master in magic infusion and Warforged. The boy thought for a second and said calmly he happened to be the absolute best... (mumbling under his breath that at least he will be someday). Excited finding an expert was so easy Root begged for the boy's help and he agreed, for a price. Root would have to help him in all aspects of his life while he searched for something.   And so Root became a dumpster diver for the strange boy known as Merle, hoping one day he would be fixed. His apprehensions about people lessened as he spent more time with Merle. The boy was kind and gentle, unlike the previous people he had known. Maybe it was an elf thing.
