XV: Escapade in the COGS
General Summary
Year 2 ends and the group all splits to spend the summer each in their homes. We go over the time each spends with their own, with Flip mostly on their own at the beach, Lilli staying at Morgrave and Jolie giving a gut wrenching set of details of life back home before each receives a letter, near the end of the summer break.
Dear student of the prestigious Morgrave Academy for future Adventurers,
I have a potential job for you, that might be too simple for a guild of adventurers, but perfect practice for adventurers in training.
Our workplace, a branch of Tinkersmelt Industries in the Upper Cogs, has been condemned and off limits to civilians. Within is a most needed cargo now requiring retrieval.
If you are interested, please visit me at 1485 Coarsale Road in Lower Dura. If I receive no reply by Sypheros 1st, I will assume the task was denied.
Sincerely,
Horace Danklave
Through their magewright use of sendings, they play a rather amusing game of telephone over the course of 2 days and then, after saying he'd be down in 6 days, Flip is down the very next day, haunting the streets of Lower Dura (a poor / workers district in Sharn). He tries to have a conversation with Mr. Danklave and promises to return with his team. With sending, he asks Lilli where they all are and the message is relayed as Jolie is traveling. Lilli is able to collect Flip and bring him back home for them all to regroup.
Together they gather information by knocking on Horace Danklave's door once more. Jolie taking the role of face of the party gets much better results than Flip did and gathers that the factory where he worked is closed to civilians (non-adventurers) and he needs his lucky tools back. Excellent rolls are done to negotiate a higher pay, as they are students afterall and the guilds would charge more. In a rush and in a huff, he closes the door with a last "It starts at 8.", without any more information.
The trio heads down and are met with glaring heat right at the gate of the COGS, where they use their student passes to get in. There, they follow the way to the factory in question and found it locked with a small lock puzzle, that is solved in seconds (the word COUNTDOWN was written backwards, with the code starting at 8). Inside, they find the place mostly empty but find some info in some journals about mechanisms and the likes, as well as work codes. In the back, there was a young rust monster pest that got in and found themselves in a fight. Quickly dispatching of it, they then headed downstairs where they were over lava flows and metal piping and machines. There was the tools, but also a magma Mephit named BB (bee bee). Bee bee rudely tried to tell everyone to get out, and threatened to burn them all. With some persuasions from Lilli (and cheese), it was pacified long enough to retrieve the tools. However it's havock wrecking was making the devices hiss and whistle and rattle in a worrisome way, and a quick investigation showed that soon, this whole place would blow if not stopped.
As heroes and adventurers do, they stepped up. Additional persuasion failed, and initiative was rolled. Flip was downed, and a few bits of damage was done, but still, the group was victorious. By this points, the machines were rattling heavily and some healing was dispensed as the team met a pipes and gears mini puzzle to relieve the overheat and pressure, but not before accidently releasing some damaging steam and downing Flip again.
By the end, the trio emerged successful and were able to gain their pay with extra, Flip bearing a new scar to his neck area, and the three went for interviews for the Sharn Inquisitor (in IC chat), ending the summer.
