Festival of Rahsava

The Festival of Rahsava is an annual event that takes place in the Lannai Plateau. The festival itself commemorates the joining of several clans during the Hallowing War, to form one of the most effective protective militias in the Ballock Desert. The two tribes were the Savai and the Lannish, for whom the Lannai Plateau is also named. Rahsava is a word in the Akasthus language (the common tongue of the Desert Lands) meaning to ignite. Just like the joining of the Savai and Lannish clans ignited the conflict between the desert clans and the kingdom of Callte and Kalimar--the first regions to fall under the command of the Unhallowed forces in the central region of the continent--during the Hallowing War, the Rahsava festival is observed through fire.   At sunset, just as the sun finishes its descent below the horizon, the clans of the Ballock Desert will set free small lanterns into the sky. Each of these lanterns is unique and adorned with prayers and wishes to the ancestors who died during the battles between the clans and the Unhallowed forces. Often families will jointly construct elaborate filigree, cloth patterns, or frameworks for these lanterns. For moving clans, small strips of chitin or hides will adorn the bottom frames as a token to the ancestors.   The festival is quite the sight to behold from the vantage of the Lannai Plateau, as thousands of paper and cloth lanterns are released over the desert. Contained within each lantern, is a small packet, just above the level of the flame. As the waxed cloth finally burns through, a small powder is dropped into the flame, causing the lantern to burst into an array of colored dyes and chalks.   During this same time, the Grand Souk is redecorated in elaborate tapestries, cloth and parchment decorations which flow from the tops of the Pick Spires and market squares.
