Bowlshroom
Bowlshrooms are large subterranean mushrooms with concave caps that subsist off of nutrients that drip from the cavern's ceiling and collect in its bowl. They are usually white in color and are commonly grown by Underdark races as a food source.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Bowlshrooms grow to around 4 feet high with an average diameter of 3 feet at the largest point of the stem. Their concave bowl-shaped caps collect water that drips from cave ceilings to absorb its nutrients.
Genetics and Reproduction
Bowlshroom spores are usually found on the underside of its cap (which usually faces outward due to the concave shape). Bowlshrooms rely on other creatures feasting on the chewy underside of their cap to spread their spores.
Ecology and Habitats
Bowlshrooms quickly shrivel in open sunlight, as its body highly depends on a damp, cool environment (which makes areas around subterranean water sources ideal).
Additional Information
Uses, Products & Exploitation
Bowlshrooms are often cultivated as a food source by subterranean civilizations. The flesh on the underside of its cap is often harvested and made into stew, while the rest of the shroom is left to regrow.
People who cultivate bowlshrooms often pour buckets of water into its bowl to catalyze growth, and the abundance of water provided by this causes bowshrooms raised in captivity to grow faster than those in the wild.
