Ella of the Ashes
Ella of the Ashes was a Queen Consort of Yesterland during Eden’s Second Age. The daughter of wealthy Earthling refugees, she grew up hearing delightful stories of the old days. And yet, in Eden, all the family had to show for itself was the crumbling château they’d clung to as a Calamity brought their iteration of reality to its end.
As those familiar with the Earthling fairy tale about her will know, Ella’s mother soon died, her father quickly remarried, and then he died as well. Young Ella was thereafter tormented by her wicked stepmother and stepsisters, given the teasing nicknames Cinderella and Ella of the Ashes because of her fondness for sleeping by the fireplace—where she swore she could hear her father’s voice still.
Where the true story parts ways with the legend, however, is in who Ella fell in love with at the ball and then came to marry. It was not a prince, as the stories say, but a princess.
But they did live happily ever after. The stories have always gotten that part right, at least.
