Edar
A large and diverse empire has fallen. As powerful citizens vie for position in the newly independent kingdoms, evil forces move to exploit the fractured world. Edar is a world of forgotten dungeons, ancient gods, secretive factions, and warring kingdoms.
The Natural World
Edar is a vast continent with a diverse landscape, covering coastal beaches and cliffs, lush jungles, mountains and plains, and deserts. Much of the wilderness is uninhabited, and travel can be dangerous, owing to powerful creatures, as well as bandits and highwaymen.
The Politics of Edar
Since the collapse of the empire, regions of Edar have fallen under the influence of local rulers. These kings and queens are always searching for allies, and actively recruit mercenaries and adventurers to accomplish tasks that will expand their influence.
Magic in the World
All life is infused with magical energy. Magic is commonly used to improve the everyday lives of citizens, and spellcasting is viewed as a common intellectual pursuit, much like history, or religious studies. Wizards are well-regarded as advisers, battle mages, and purveyors of magical goods; however, Sorcerers and those who gain magical ability from an extra-planar source (Warlocks) are typically viewed as outcasts, who haven't learned the discipline and responsibility that comes with using magic. Sorcerers and Warlocks in Edar usually belong to secret factions or cults, where they hone their abilities away from the prying eyes of the public.
Chaos and Law
The Edarian schism between Wizards and Sorcerers can be viewed as a microcosm of a larger philosophical conflict between the forces of law and chaos. Just as wars are waged between the forces of good and evil, those devoted to the preservation of order find themselves in a constant battle for control against the factions who view the collapse of the empire as the vanguard of a new age of freedom and chaos.
