Coedwig's Cradle Medical Center (Koi-d-wig)
The city of Prol in Magnum Opus isn't the most noteworthy town. Compared to the shining capital of innovation, the prolific port city in the north, or the festivity-filled swamp cities, it's rather basic. However, nestled within the sleepy fields of Prol stands Cowedwig's Cradle, a medical center that has been part of some of the most life-saving procedures and medicines for ailments both mundane and magical.
In the past centuries of conflict and war, it served as a neutral ground, away from the larger cities and countries with their political biases and interests, and served to neutrally stop diseases and illnesses, whoever the patient was. While this credo has been tested, challenged, and examined thousands of times, the verdict stays true. The treatments and procedures are for everyone to use, and even the guilty shall live to be tried.
In the current post-war era of Edda, the hospital still stands at the forefront of medical innovation, along with such greats as the Parisian General Hospital of Paris, the High Spire Healing Center of Ambrosius, and even the Pan-Eddan Medical Research Guild located primarily in Penthesilea. The latest big-ticket issue the medical center is tackling is the exponentially growing amount of people born with Mana Deficiency, how it's caused, and if it could potentially be treated.
Purpose / Function
In the past, Coedwig's Cradle was a Cleric-ran institution, offering healing and ministrations on behalf of the The True Giants Diety of Life and Medicine. However as more complex illnesses began to come to the door of the Cradle, those that couldn't be cured by magic alone, many clerics were left reeling, unsure what to do.
One day a Cleric named Eirian Morris received a vision from the bark-skinned Goddess herself, beseeching them to speak with a local witch coven on the topic of their medicine, and study the ways of practical healing as they do. Finding the coven, Eirian went through many trials to become worthy of the coven's knowledge, but their determination for healing and earnest passion for saving lives carried them through and earned them not only the knowledge they sought but the camaraderie of the witches in the coven.
That was the beginning of the research side of Coedwig's Cradle, and it's a tradition that has lasted to the modern-day, as has the trials of the witch coven for medical practitioners to climb the ranks of the hospital, at least on the magical side of things.
The community of Prol and members of the hospital have also kept up good relations with the coven, even sheltering them from zealous templars during the period of Witch Hunts.
Alterations
Starting as a simple temple, the success of the hospital has rewarded itself with numerous upgrades. While it isn't as large as hospitals in more populous cities, it's three stories tall, and has the space for multiple labs and a full medical library. It also recently added in a wonderful local cafe that recently lost its original location in a fire, so that citizens and medical staff alike can take some relaxation time from busy days. Stress can negatively impact health, after all.
Architecture
The first floor of Coedwig's Cradle is designed with sanitized marble and intricate rugs, with a central fountain for the religious to pray at. This is its original design, and throughout all the rebuilding and redesigning in the past, it has stayed faithful. The extensions to the building are made with more modern materials but keep the same general structure and aesthetic.
Tourism
Coedwig's Cradle doesn't get much tourist travel. People who come there are there for a reason such as healing, research, or potential employment. The hospitals fame does help put Prol on the map, as it would otherwise barely even be a travelers stop, but it isn't a sightseeing destination for most.
