Veilnight
The distance between The Material Plane and the outer planes is something that's always in flux. Those realms closest to the Material breach more often than not, but other planes rarely come into contact without something facilitating the breach.
That does, however, have a singular exception, and that is the last day of Bronzing Autumn, the night known as Veilnight.
As the name implies, it's a span of 24 hours where the position of the planes overlap and bring themselves the closest to the Material Plane, in both good and bad ways. Elemental visitors examining the material realm, gods making themselves known and giving great boons, or horrifying creatures worming their way into our world.
The different cultures of Edda view it differently, but all of them understand it is a night where being careful, prepared, and respectful to any and all extraplanar visitors is quintessential, or it could cost you your life, or worse.
History
As long as the world had Planes, Veilnight has existed. However, it primarily got recorded in 4,820 BC by The Cabal of The Night Sky, who observed the fluctuations of Leylines following the disaster of Dark Sun.
At first it was a night of warning and careful observation, but over the years people started to realize that not every creature that came through on this night was dangerous, and some weren't even slightly malevolent. They also found it a good night for getting in touch with divine entities. As such, it has become a day of celebration and observation in the modern day, and even a day to reconnect with the dearly departed.
Execution
Each culture has their own way of setting up for the days events, but there is a general structure to it.
There's an object, typically a symbolic piece of nature, that drives away more malevolent spirits that enter the realm. Then, there's a mark put above all entrances to keep them out, while permitting those of less-ill intentions to approach the home.
Components and tools
For those who wish to interact with a specific plane, there are a variety of items that can be used, all depending on which plan one's trying to reach. The most common is Clerics and Paladins attempting to reach their gods directly, in which case they will prepare significant symbols of their faith in order to get in touch with them.
Observance
All festivities, rituals, and religious practices are held starting the night of the 29th and go until the morning on the 1st of Falling Autumn.
