The Great Eddan Mail Office

The world of Edda, while constrained within the limits of the Wild Wall, is vast and interconnected, with thousands of people potentially corresponding with one another on the daily. This makes an optimally running mail system a peak priority for the basis of infrastructure, especially in the changing times of social unity among the nations.    Thus, in order to ensure efficient and expedient worldwide communication, the Great Eddan Mail Office was created in the central nation of Boncly and is fully staffed with talented and dedicated postal carriers and equipped with teleportation, airships, automated wagons, and equestrians aplenty to achieve their goal.

Purpose / Function

The purpose of the Great Eddan Mail Office is primarily to champion international correspondence between the nations, and to defend the privacy and validity of that commerce at all times. It's a duty that many within its walls take so seriously, that out of all Edda, the G.E.M.O was one of the only truly neutral parties, even though spies made their way in (but didn't last for long).

Alterations

When Boncly was another part of Agartha, the Mail Office was done up in Agarthan stylings, with square stone archways and stonecraft murals of various Agarthan legends. When independence was achieved from Agartha, those stoneworks were taken down, but the concept remained, featuring murals of Boncly's history and tales of the past, mostly of the indigenous population.

Architecture

The G.E.M.O is a 10-story octagonal tower, with four underground floors and the roof being a landing station for air mail methods. Each floor is roughly 300 feet across in either direction and holds a variety of offices, storage rooms, and faculty spaces. The building is mostly wood and stone, although renovations during and after the Border Wars replaced a lot of internal wood structures with metal instead, but the wooden exterior and paneling inside remain.

Defenses

While rarely needing it, the G.E.M.O is equipped with a magic barrier as well as thick iron shutters in all its entrances and most vital rooms, along with tower ballistae on the roof. These were implemented primarily during the Border Wars, and only saw rare use then and no use since, save for one incident with a maddened giant hawk.

History

In 892 EE, the Great Eddan Mail Office was created by Agarthan postal officer, Scott Ó Cuana, who had noticed a slight problem arising in Edda. The current seven nations had their own postal services within them, and international shipping existed but was incredibly slow and with very little accountability between them, leading to confusion, delays, and grievous mishandling.   So, after a successful proposal signed by the Postmaster Generals of all seven nations, he got to work building his massive project: A central location for incoming and outgoing mail, run and operated by people from all nations, and a neutral zone in regard to allegiance. It was built nearby present-day Ranger before Boncly had gotten its independence from Agartha, as it was one of the most central locations possible for all of Edda. It didn't hurt that the territory known as Boncly, with its high population of horses and equestrians in equal measure, had a ready supply of speedy and skilled riders to take messages near and far in record times.   Its operations have continued since its founding, not ceasing no matter the tragedy or circumstance, even during the entirety of the Border Wars and Boncly's fight for independence, although they did have to contend with spies and saboteurs throughout the height of the war.

Tourism

Most people who travel to the G.E.M.O aren't going there to see the sights, although there are some niche postal fanatics who go, mind the pun, postal over it. However, the G.E.M.O is very well traveled and known, just for business rather than for pleasure.
