Mind Wolves
A flash of movement in the dark, claws buried in your back. You feel the hot breath and spittle on your neck and face, expecting to feel more pain. Where you would expect claws, you feel a searing pain behind your eyes instead, and struggle desperately as you mind is devoured from inside out. A few tense, painful moments later your body collapses back to the ground and the wolf howls into the night, decrying the victory of the hunt.
A pack of vaguely humanoid beasts gathers around a pack of deer, their prey frozen solid by a psychic assault of ghastly force. The hulking forms walk between the statues until they find the fattest and tastiest, dragging the defenseless creatures back to their caves. As soon as their attention is diverted, the deer come back into their own and flee, scattering on the wind like so many leaves.
Two men fight in a clearing on a cloudy night, their swords crossing and clashing in the half-light. The battle is fierce but well-matched... until the clouds part and the full moon shines down on the pair. A breath passes before one of the men is transformed into a half-beast, half-man, his breathing even and calm. This change does not repel the other, he's seen such things before and survived, but then the moon shines through the spectre floating behind the beast, revealing the spirit of the man he was fighting. The two dance forward with fury, attacking with mind and body at once.
The Mind Wolf is a creature that is very similar in origins to the Werewolf of legend. The full moon, or concentrated study and assimilation, allow the carrier of this disease to transform into a large, wolf-like humanoid creature. The key difference is that Mind Wolves, through evolution, or magical interference, have gained the ability to project the mind of their human-form into the air around them and into the minds of those nearby. The spectral form appears as a ghost to those with the sight, or invisibly otherwise. The two bodies operate independently from one another and can attack with both mind and body, disabling or devouring their prey with either. The only limitation being that they cannot be separated by more than a few feet.
There are some who reject this transformation, and their mental ghost is left to watch the actions of their body, dragged along by their spectral tether. This often produces more fierce actions in the body, as it is rebelling against the attitudes of it's former mind. When harmony can be achieved between both, and the transformation mastered, the bearer of this curse gains any number of psychic abilities. Such a master can also fight in tandem with her more powerful body and her focused mind, dealing terrible blows with each.
