The Districts of Edo (City)

Edo is split up into districts a few districts, each with their own rough purpose and people who frequent them. Once I draw a better map I'll put it here, but for now just go with the descriptions.

Fishing Slums

Slums located outside of the city walls but not outside of the city border, this area is sparsely covered with buildings which are mostly the homes of fishermen, doing their lives work for the unfortunately low pay that the job gives. Nothing much else to find here.

Outer City

This aptly named district directly borders the city walls to the East and the Smith's District to the West. It is mostly composed of tightly packed, fairly low income housing units as well as a large amount of shops near the three roads towards the inner city which lead from the three gates.

Smith's District

The district so named because it is where the majority of smiths and others with similar jobs (tanners, seamstresses, etc.) go to work. the district is noisy during the daytime and due to this is often avoided by the masses. It borders the Outer City to the East and the the West, in order from North to South, Housing District #1, Common District, Housing District #2, Old City.

Old City

Located on the Southern side of the city and bordering the Smith's District the the East, Housing District #2 and the Sakura District to the North, and Broad "New" Edo and The Shallows on the West. The Old City is the general area in which the original city of Edo was built from around 400-700AC. Few buildings from that time period remain, save for a few temples, but nonetheless it is recognized as a district of its own. It is around half housing, one quarter tourism locations/temples, and one quarter workplaces.

Housing Districts

These two districts are for housing and are both bordering the Common District. The housing is generally middle class with a few high class options in #2 and a t least 30% low class options in #1. Not much else to say.

Common District

Located right in the centre of the city, bordering many districts. It is the "main" district of the city as pretty much everything happens here. Built around a few large streets that lead to everywhere else in the city it is packed day and night with people of all classes. A Large amount of the buildings are dedicated to stores and the service industry (people for hire). Additionally, the majority of inns and places to stay temporarily for pay are located her.

Market District

Bordering the Northern part of the Common District and the Western part of Housing District #1, the Market district is mostly composed of the massive Mikifuto Market, an open air market filled with all variety of goods, from the most common to the most rare and expensive, such as Lepethite. The district is much less dense in buildings, as the market takes up much of the space, however there are still rows even within the market serving as a kind of separator between the different sections, and as a place to hang the red cloth that shields the market from rain and snow.

The Shallows

Located on the South-Western side of the city, the coast, The Docks, and Broad "New" Edo. The Shallows is a more poor district so named because it is only a few feet above water level, and were a flood to happen the streets would be filled with shallow water. It is mostly composed of low cost housing and a few stores, as well as lower quality inns which are much cheaper than those in the Common District. It is the city's centre for crime and robberies are not infrequent at night but it still appeals to those who do not wish to pay much money while being able to make tons.

The Docks

Located on the lower West shore of the city the naming is fairly self explanatory. It is a small and one district used for most ship arrivals and departures, and is where the majority of inter-city trading happens. The landlocked part of the district also has a large amount of warehouses.

Broad "New" Edo

Located near the Western shore, Broad "New" Edo is the extension of the Old City (technically including The Docks and The Shallows) which was built between 1000AC and 1200AC, and has been under somewhat constant renovation since then. It does not have the same amount of cultural significance as the Old City but it's purpose is much the same as it is housing and business split fairly evenly. It borders the Sakura District, the Upper District, The Docks, and The Shallows.

Upper District

On the upper West shore the Upper District borders the Sakura District and Broad "New" Edo. It is mostly a housing district for the wealthy and contains the headquarters for the city guard. It is a nice, well planned neighbourhood which, alongside housing, offers many gardens and a few parks.

Sakura District

Bordering most districts, the Sakura District runs down the centre of the city vertically, eventually ending at the wall to Edo Castle. It is so named the Sakura District because of the overwhelming prevalence of sakura trees. It is evidently where the annual sakura festival is held. This is where most of the temples and shrines of the city are, dedicated to all of the gods (including the evil ones) this district also serves as a massive place of prayer.

Edo Castle

Located atop a large hill this is barely a district, just a walled off building from which the Emperor and most of the government rules. Not sure if i'm giving it an article yet, but I'm not writing about it extensively here.
