Trolox, Scion of Dread
Trolox is the Scion of Dread. He died in 1912 AS when his enemies found his physical form and violently dismembered it, though it is said that when they did so his body exploded into a cloud of spores that drove them all to madness. A myconid scholar and alchemist, he lived peacefully among his people in the extensive fungal plains beneath the Bones of the Beast until the day that war came to his city from the east.
They enacted a horrible, but efficient, genocide on the peaceful myconid clans, raiding their vast stores of food and then burning their mushroom forests to ash. Those that weren’t snuffed out during the carnage, starved to death or were picked off by the horrors of the Upside Down in the aftermath. As for Trolox, his body was left mutilated and broken - but alive. Utterly consumed by an unending hatred for the surface races who had destroyed his society, he turned his knowledge of magic and alchemy towards a darker purpose. Though his body was ruined, his mind remained strong and now forever twisted. He sought out and learned the lost secrets of how to enter the realm of dreams.
Before long, when he had mastered that realm and its dreaming ways, he began to seek out those who attack the innocent, those who would use their magical prowess for power and greed. He would find these despicable creatures within the realm, ignorantly believing themselves to be safe and secure beneath the veil of sleep, and shatter their minds with dark visions and nightmares, torturing them with glee as their sanity slowly slipped away. They would find no rest, no peace, and would often take their own lives to avoid the nightmares and horrors that awaited them when they slumbered. Unfortunately for the dreaming masses, Trolox’s hunger for madness and despair could only be contained but for so long.
Eventually, the guilt or innocence of those whose dreams he targeted would matter less and less. Finally and inevitably, after many decades of his slumbering crusade, Trolox had descended completely into madness, roaming the astral plane as a ravenous force of lunacy. It was then, after a plague of nightmares swept through the kingdom of Graithage, leaving every child catatonic with fear, that heroes were dispatched to find the horror that haunted the dreams of Edras and put an end to its reign of terror. And so they did, finding the body of Trolox, old and withered and broken, locked in a deep trance as he roamed the astral plane. Within an alcove in an underground passage, hidden from the light of day, Trolox was ended by the brave heroes of Graithage, though they paid with their sanity. Nimriel, amused at this myconid’s single-minded devotion, quietly plucked his soul from the Well and stationed him at her side as the Scion of Dread.
As a Scion, he has never appeared in the waking world, but frequently can be found in the astral plane or within the dreams of sleeping Soulborn. His visage is of a swirling cloud of shadowy spores that loosely resembles a giant Myconid with two pulsing red orbs of flame for eyes. Usually appearing to those who have angered him in some way, he brings only horrors and twisted dreams that one can scarcely escape when they awake. On rare occasion he will appear to protect someone from the creatures that hunt the astral realm or those who would use powers like his to attack the innocent. He begrudgingly shares the dream realm with the Scion of Slumber, Duchess Davisa Imesha, an individual who he sees as short-sighted and weak, but otherwise respects.
