Founders Day

Colored banners and ribbons line the streets, fluttering in the summer breeze coming warm off the lake. The air is filled with the sounds and smells of revelry. Laugher, music, and joyous shouting; fresh baked bread and free-flowing ale. Children play in the streets, darting underfoot and between dense crowds, pinching sweets from unwatched stands.   It's Founders' Day in Nuhaven. A day of joy following a day of remembrance.

History

A thousand years ago refugees from The Rift and The Fall of Garamor arrived at the banks of The Great Lake, exhausted from long, hard travel and still grieving the loss of their homes and loved ones half a continent away. But when they set eyes on the Great Lake, it's beauty and bounty brought them renewed hope. They set camp on the shores of the lake, and that camp would later grow into a village that its people named Nuhaven, a new home.   Today, Nuhaven is one of the largest cities in Egera. On Founders Day it's citizens and surrounding villages remember the struggle their forefathers endured while fleeing the ruins of their homeland on Founders' Eve, and wake on the morning of Founders' Day to celebrate the end of that journey.

Execution

The day before Founders' Day, known commonly as Founders' Eve, is marked by solemn remembrance. It is common for people to fast or eat only meager meals on this day to recall the struggles of the original Garamoran refugees. It is a day for acknowledging the struggles one faces in life, and for community service to those less fortunate.   But on Founders' Day morning, the tone shifts dramatically. Children wake to colorfully decorated homes and streets. Traditionally no labor is to be done on Founders' Day, as it is a time for celebration and rest. After the long journey from Garamor, the refugees had found their new home, and they could at last rest. Parties spring up in the streets, often furnished by work done the day before.   Communal feasts are not uncommon, even in the poorer parts of town. Pot-luck style gatherings in courtyards or empty streets are the most frequent.
