The Spell-Breakers

The Spell-Breakers are an order of holy knights who serve The Chantry as hunters and guardians of the mages. Their numbers are mainly made up of humans who follow the teachings of the Chantry, but the odd elf or half-orc can also be seen in their company. While Spell-Breakers are officially deemed a force of defenders by the Chantry, established to protect the communities of the faithful from magical threats, they are in fact an army unto themselves; well-equipped, highly disciplined and devoted to their duties.

Structure

The Spellbreakers have an organisational structure that starts with Dagger-Initiates (initiates in short-hand). Initiates will be admitted into training and their mettle tested to prove their worth as a member of the order. Training is arduous and spiritually taxing due to exposure to magical elements, as a necessity for developing a resistance to its effects. Survival rates are high, however, as the training does not involve lethal activities (though, as ever with magic, there is always an element of random risk).
After succeeding as an initiate, they will be promoted to a Sword-Squire (squire for short), who will be assigned to an existing and fully-qualified Spellbreaker to learn the ways of the order. They will have a personal hand in the forging process of both their sword and their helmet; each Spellbreaker's crest is slightly unique as a result, though the core design is identical. Once they have proven themselves worthy of both their weaponry and their armour, Dagger-Squires will be dispatched in groups to tackle a minor threat or menace to prove their ability to operate away from their superiors. This might be a den of stray goblins, a small band of brigands, or other such concern that is beneath the general activities of a true Spellbreaker.
Those who survive and accomplish this final task will be promoted to a Blade-Knight (knight) - most Spellbreakers belong to this rank, and these are the most commonly seen. They will perform most duties of the order, from border patrols to full-scale war. Knights are taught to carry with them an extreme sense of honour and dedication to their cause, above, even their own life.
Those who are especially successful, honourable, or renowned may well be promoted to a Lance-Captain (captain). These veteran warriors will command groups of knights on more complicated causes - rooting out an organized thieves' den, defeating rogue magical creatures (such as trolls or even flesh golems), and engaging rogue mages. Captains are often very fierce swordsmen and one captain is a fierce combatant against dangerous foes in his own right.
Those captains that see long-term success and become legendary in their field become Spear-Generals (generals) who command multiple squads of Spellbreakers into fierce and extensive odds. The occasion that calls for a Spear-General to form a congregation of Spellbreakers is a serious one indeed, and will usually involve the quelling of a tremendous threat like a cult, a greater demon, or a sprawling coven of rogue mages. Spear-Generals are formidable combatants and will often be leading the charge against any significant foe with their own brand of martial mastery and magical knowledge. There are three Spear-Generals active at any one time, one for each major territory owned by or overseen by the Chantry - The North, Western Lands, and the College island to the east.
There is only one rank above a Spear-General in the chantry's formal military arm, that being the Shield-Marshall, a person hand-picked by the Divine herself. The Marshall is a practically unrivalled master of tactics, hand-to-hand combat, and magical resilience. Veterans of decades of war and conquest against the greatest threats to the Chantry. The marshall has the full authority of the Divine to muster all the forces of the Chantry against a foe, and it would be with him the Divine would confer before declaring war upon a hostile power or menace of sufficient strength. Every Shield-Marshall has gone down in Chantry legend as a Saint that fought with unparalleled fervor against the enemies of the Spellbreaker cause.

Public Agenda

The Spell-Breakers are considered by the common folk to be the saviors and holy warriors of Eidos, protecting the world from the dangers of magic unchecked. As the Chantry’s military arm, they are recruited primarily for their martial skill and religious dedication to the Maker. Given the difficult choices Spell-Breakers must make in the course of their duty, they must be loyal to the Order and maintain an emotional distance from the plight of their charges. It is said that a Spellbreaker’s obedience is more important to the Chantry than his or her moral centre.

Assets

The exact number of Spell-Breakers is known only to The Chantry , though rumor has it their numbers are in the tens of thousands, rivaled only by The Staldor Empire . These numbers encompass regular knights, archers, cavalry and the enigmatic gryphon riders.
They also employ the use of Petricite armor coating, giving them the upper hand in combat against magic weilders. While,at the same time wearing amulets made out of the same material for personal protection when off-duty.

History

The Spell-Breakers were formed shortly after Justinia The First stopped the rune wars in an effort to capture all magic weilders and keep them in check. Since then the Breakers have served as the hand of justice for the Chantry, following the divines every command.

“Magic exists to serve man, and never to rule over him.”
