Mountain Eris Fabric
Laranian Mountain Eris fabric is a rare, highly sought after material crafted from the wool of the elusive, temperamental Mountain Eris, a white or pale cream goat-like species native to the mountains of Larane. Each individual wool strand is as fine as a spider's silk, yet resilient, magical and when coiled together - insulating, making it a highly sought-after material among the magically inclined (or aversed) citizens of Larane and beyond.
In it's natural state, the wool of the Mountain Eris possesses a unique ability to regulate temperature. It acts as a natural insulator, keeping the wearer warm in the harshest of winter chills and cool during scorching summer days. This remarkable quality is attributed to the animals' natural affinity with the elements and exposure to the latent Dragon Magic of the summits they call home.
While it is truly splendid to work with and produces garments befitting nobility; what truly sets this extraordinary wool apart are its magical properties. When spun into thread and woven into garments by a mage, it becomes a conduit for the weaver's own energy and magical shields. This property has led to creating the material (as well the catching and shearing of the wild animals it comes from) an important part of a young mages' training in the Royal Academy. Harming a Mountain Eris is strictly forbidden, and grounds for immediate expulsion from the Academy.
When woven by mages who do not intend to use it themselves, the wool can be sewn into garments that hold magical resistance properties based on the wishes of the weaver-mage who crafts it. It can act as a shield against enchantments, spells, and curses, offering protection to the wearer from malevolent forces that might seek to harm them. This aspect has earned the wool a reputation among adventurers and non-Academy mages, making it an essential item in their travel bags when it can be obtained. It can also be used to resist certain elemental affects, such as heat or frost - but that does not make it impervious to them. It's most common enchantment is to resist penetration, making it a lightweight fabric capable of reducing most major knife and sword injuries.
Another charming Academy tradition is to assess the capabilities of it's apprentices based on the number of enchantments they are able to weave into their Eris wool robes by the time they complete the garment. Those students hailing from noble houses or respected Tradesmen lines are often given hereditary tools and spells to give them a 'leg up' on the common-born mages and ensuring their social supremacy in the great 'Game' of Academy politics and funding.
The Mountain Eris is found in the range above the Laranian Capital of Herath, though the location of wild flocks is a closely guarded secret by the Academy and the Sword Clan who's elder is bound by sylltiad to the mountains themselves. The raw wool is rarely, if ever, traded outside of Larane - despite the strong demand and high prices it commands. Completed fabrics can be found, typically through Academy benefits and trade deals with other magical institutions.
Young Academy mages ascending the summits crowning Herath understand that they must be ready mentally, physically and magically to find the Eris flocks and secure their wool. It is not uncommon for most to drop out of their first attempt, choosing instead to pursue further study and preparation to try again the following year. It is a rare apprentice to succeed on their first try, and the few who do are generally seen as both reckless and students to watch warily.
