The Seven Portals

Legendary Gateways to Other Worlds

Purpose / Function

What the original purpose of the portals may have been in a matter of conjecture, although travel would seem to be the obvious reason for them. Now they are variously sought for fame and fortune, trade opportunities, magical study and a hundred other reasons.

Sensory & Appearance

They legends say that these portals manifest in the following ways:   The Smoldering Ladder: This portal appears as a smoldering ladder when open, and an eerie colorless pillar when closed. A shrill keening noise seeps from the portal. It smells strongly like charcoal. The key to opening it is a mystery.   The Scarlet Tear: This portal appears as a shining scarlet rip when open, and a flashing, sputtering rectangle when closed. It is just beyond two markers. A piercing wailing noise comes from the portal. It smells a little like licorice. The key to opening it is a combination of emotions and items.   The Sapphire Pool: This portal appears as a blazing, flashing hoop when open, and an icy, dripping sapphire pool when closed. The key to opening it is a mystery. It leads to Helione - A marvelous realm of misty valleys, broken lowlands, and sapphire seas. The realm is mostly populated by humans, though with large numbers of other races. The humans of Helione are ruled by a powerful lich named Vultiza.   The Glimmering Orb: This portal appears as a tenebrous bridge when open, and a shimmering, glimmering orb when closed. A deep rattling sound seeps from the portal. It smells very like rum. The key to opening it is a combination of time and gestures.   The Emerald Glyph: This portal appears as a dark emerald glyph. It is suspended between two columns. An eerie thundering noise seeps from the portal. The key to opening it is a combination of words and gestures.   The Crimson Bridge: This portal appears as a smoking, glistening crimson bridge. It opens when Moaryli is waning crescent and D'Ilael is third quarter.   The Viridian Tree: Beneath the smoldering looking viridian tree when lies a churning, murky bronze pool. A mournful rattling noise emanates from the portal and the tree above when a wind blows off the sea to the north.

History

Whether any or all of the seven portals actually exist, rumors persist that Deadmouth Island holds seven hidden routes to other worlds and planes of existence. Each taking a different form and joining with a different place, these fabled gateways to other locations are sought by adventurers, merchants and magicians alike for their own purposes. In over 300 years, nothing more than the whispers of the portals have been verified. Rumors of their appearances and the methods used to open them vary widely, though some common threads have emerged. Who might have created the portals, if they do exist, is a mystery. They appear to have existed in the years Before First Landing. Spread across Deadmouth Island, the seven portals have lain dormant for centuries.
