Gray dwarf

Gray dwarves, also known as duergar, are a subterranean subspecies of dwarf. Collectively enslaved by illithids near the beginning of the Era of Cloud, and only beginning to find freedom near the end, they are a hardened, joyless people, willing to make any sacrifice necessary for survival. They tend to be thinner than their mountain and hill-dwelling kin, with narrower shoulders and corded muscles. They all have snow white hair and dull gray skin. Their heads are bald, their beards unkempt, their faces hard. Similar to drow, they have superior darkvision, but sensitivity to sunlight. Countless generations of slavery under the mental manipulation and torment imposed by mind flayers have helped them build up a resistance to such tricks and spells.

Naming Traditions

Duergar employ simple, monosyllabic names. All clan names that they may have once had have been lost, as there was little sense of clanship in their days of slavery, so any surnames that they claim are more recent inventions, no older than a few generations.
