Lei Cemetery

Lei Cemetery is a graveyard in Bluehaven. It is known as the most beautiful of its kind in the world, and by far the largest, and is run by the clerics of Elairus who reside in the adjacent temple.   The cemetery is built like a garden, with a winding cobblestone path running all through and around its over 3,000 acres of land, taking visitors past the millions of graves which each have distinct statues or finely crafted gravestones commemorating the memory of those buried there. The grounds themselves are lush with carefully tended foliage, and during the evenings thousands of fireflies light up the walkway.

History

The cemetery was begun just within a few years of Bluehaven's founding. When Elairus returned after his disappearance several decades later, he saw how small and dismal the cemetery was, and began a project not only to landscape the area to make it beautiful but also to overhaul the way the citizens thought of loss and memory. He was a proponent of giving proper respect to the remains of loved ones and especially to their memory, so in cases when there was no body to be buried, he worked individually with families to create a shrine to their memory that the family could visit.   With his influence and hard work, the cemetery became beautiful, and shortly afterwards the council running the city at the time proposed changing the name officially to Lei Cemetery in honor of Elairus's wife, whose body had been exhumed and moved into a lavish crypt. Soon enough more and more people were moving to Bluehaven just to be buried there. As Bluehaven's population grew, so too did the size of the cemetery. When Elairus died, his body was shortly afterwards laid to rest next to that of his wife.   Daily burials have been taking place in the cemetery for over five thousand years.
