The Space Between
The Space Between is the name given to the extraplanar space through which good creatures pass after death to be purified and prepared for entry into the Beyond. Various extraordinary adventurers who have traversed there, as well as some clerics and prophets, have shared a few details about its nature, though much is still unknown.
It is described as a desolate place, dark, cloudy, and extremely cold. It is illuminated only by pinpricks of light, now known to be the stars themselves, which act as wayposts on the journey. This journey is facilitated by a guide with a deep personal connection to the deceased, often somebody he or she knew in life, but possibly somebody like a historical figure or ancestor. Each star represents a past event or flaw with which the deceased must reconcile before moving on. When all wayposts have been visited and dealt with, the deceased is admitted at last into the Beyond.
During the Eventide, and the darkening of the stars therein, this process was halted. However, as the Space Between exists outside of time, there is some dispute over whether the experience of the souls there during this time was actually affected.
