Varekan
Varekan is a material created by dwarven wizards and smiths to mimic the effects of sunlight, mainly as a light source and source of nutrients for crops, to make life underground possible. Different cities and clans use this material in different ways; most often it is threaded in small amounts throughout a community, perhaps in street tiles or pillars, and only in larger quantities near farms. However, a scant few communities have gathered all their varekan and affixed it in a single mass hanging above the city or town.
Varekan is "charged" with firelight, and most dwarven communities try to create something very similar to the natural cycle of day and night, though some completely subterranean strongholds simply go by their own rules.
The process by which varekan is created is a sacred secret known only by the most advanced dwarven mages and craftsmen.
