CoS Session 17: Dragon in the Machine

General Summary

• While Nikolaj and Aldo are sleeping off last night's heist, the negotiations continue under strained circumstances
• Gen. Boua’s stressed after Fairouz's attack on Kanara's museum, not really in a mood to release Alma
• Roland and Catriona bring up Melita, Genna’s daughter
• Gen. Boua says Melita was arrested for assisting Alma’s Court of the Undying activity
• Says Genna came over to plead for Melita and Alma’s release
• Roland suggests Genna may be a member of the Court
• Boua agrees, allows party to speak with Alma for a half-hour
• That night, Boua sends crack team to arrest Genna (nat 20)
• Nikolaj fills Roland and Catriona in on him and Aldo’s wild night
• The party's not pleased, especially when Roland learns about their fight with Fairouz
• The party rests for the night, prepares for interrogation tomorrow
• The party meets Alma at the prison beneath the Central Palace
• Alma fills them in on past year
• She was kidnapped from Hakon, Darwish rescued her in Ravi
• He told Alma about the Court of the Undying, taught her the power of magic
• She became influenced by the Court viewpoint, grew to hate Avicenna and Gameth
• She was plotting something with Fairouz in Kanara when she was caught
• Catriona is disheartened to see Alma so corrupted by the Court
• She tries to convince her that Gameth and Hakon have changed
• Alma listens, but she’s adamant that Court is right
• Roland asks her about Court’s plan in Kanara
• Alma, Genna (Fairouz), and Melita (Markova) all need to be together
• Once they’re all together, they can summon something big
• Alma is carted back to prison, party begs Gen. Boua to stop her
• Boua’s skeptical that Alma could plan something from jail, but agrees
• They make it to the prison, and the Court members are all in a jail cell
• They give Roland et al. a preview of Court’s summoning abilities
• The jail cell starts glowing with bluish-yellowish runes, portal appears
• Catriona casts wind wall, but they escape as a dragon's massive claw appears out of nowhere
• A black dragon appears in the cell, breaking through the wall into the city
• Gen. Boua orders party back onto her carriage to chase the dragon
• Boss Fight: Black Dracolich
• Dragon was buffeted by Catriona’s wind wall on way out of portal
• Nikolaj and Aldo miss a couple of shots, Boua fires electric javelins
• She actually hits the monster this time!
• Roland does his radiant damage thing, almost gets it down to its last leg
• But not before the dragon sends out a massive wave of acid breath
• Nikolaj dodges, the rest of party takes 40 damage
• Roland and Catriona pass out and nearly die
• Nikolaj, against all odds, delivers an epic killing blow
• He leaps from the top of the carriage, stabs dragon’s eyes out with his two knives
• After the battle one of Boua’s officers stabilizes passed out party members
• Gen. Boua assesses damage, tells party that she’s closing Avicenna/Gamerian border
• Roland asks her why, Boua says she can’t allow magic through borders if it means destruction like this in her kingdom
• She wants the party defeat the Court, but she senses conflict beyond that
• There may be war between Avicenna and Gameth one day
• Roland lays hands on Boua, heals her for 10 HP
• Boua says they have to leave tomorrow morning
• The next day Hoeven wakes them up after long rest, tells them it’s time to leave Avicenna
• Aldo meets them at gate after a morning with Gen. Boua
