CoS Session 24: Hot Off the Presses
General Summary
3/2/874
- The voyage to Oakengaard is pretty uneventful
- Sebastian experiments with feeding Bessie different food, she gets sick
- Elan did acrobatics, Nikolaj read some Gothic/horror novels
- Roland and Theron are happy (and intimate) together
- Made it to the Hakonian city of Oakengaard
- Unlike Gameria or Kanara, it’s a city of lush vegetation and magic
- The Temple of Arvyll, in center of city, is built into massive Sequoia
- The party gets paid for last mission, gets called to meet with Prince Refn
- He’s the Prince in charge of Hakon now that Astrid’s queen
- Along the way the party gets anti-war pamphlets from protesting citizens
- Prince Refn explains how unrest is growing in Hakon
- High Priest Ove of Arvyll is at the forefront of antiwar unrest
- Asks them to investigate High Priest, report back with any dirt
- He doesn’t want Ove to become a martyr
- Party leaves and decides to go see High Priest for themselves
- At town square there’s a tavern where Ove drinks with his disciples
- He’s going off on another spiel against the war and Queen Astrid
- Elan interrupts his lecture, they get into argument about the war
- Roland also speaks up about need to stand up to Avicenna
- Ove says Hakon doesn’t need to get involved in foreign wars
- He’s suggesting outright rebellion or treason
- Party leaves after a bit, especially since they’re getting looks from everybody
- They retire to their own tavern, plan out their investigations for tomorrow
- Elan heads back to the bar where Ove was speaking
- It seems like there’s a lot of support for him, even threats of unrest
- There are some priestesses from Erivo who don’t support him
- She writes to her father, and it sounds like Ove’s popular nationwide
- Sebastian and Nikolaj go check out Temple of Arvyll
- It’s a spacious cathedral carved into the tree with elven designs
- Nikolaj sneaks into Ove’s private quarters
- He doesn’t find anything suspicious, no compromising docs
- He overhears some priests talking about Ove planning a revolt, though
- All Nikolaj finds is an address for a pamphlet printing warehouse
- Roland goes to the Handgun’s Oakengaard hideout to see what they have on Ove
- Adrien, head of the Oakengaard cell, shows him an empty folder
- They’ve been tracking him for years, but he’s clean
- As he’s heading back to tavern, a priest of Helm with piercing green eyes stops him in street
- ‘Follow the pamphlets’ he says, then disappears
- Party regroups at night, shares their info
- They’re stumped, so they decide to check out this weird pamphlet lead -The next day the party checks out the warehouse
- Sebastian tries following around Ove for a couple hours, gets noticed
- Rest of party warns Prince Refn about lead, ask for security backup
- The warehouse is by the docks, window’s open on 3rd floor
- Nikolaj tries to sneak up to window, critical fails
- Elan does the job, sneaks into supply closet
- Finds rope to get rest of party up to 3rd floor
- When they look inside the warehouse, find plenty of pamphlet palettes
- A lot of high-tech printing presses pumping out the documents
- Party tries to keep low profile, Roland and Elan get caught
- A big, burly guy comes out and starts asking where they’re from
- Roland gets to deceive him, the guy relaxes some
- The guy admits that Avicenna’s been paying off Ove
- They’re the ones funding his presses and sermons
- Burly guys shows Roland the invoices, then locks him in
- The guy transforms into a werebear
- Mini-Battle: Werebear
- Roland takes some damage, but his divine smite’s intense
- Nikolaj and others break into locked room, stab werebear
- Roland, of course, delivers killing blow and chops the enemy's head off
- After the battle, they find plenty of documents incriminating Ove
- Prince Refn’s guards are there, shut down warehouse
- They show the documents to the Prince, Ove’s arrested
- Later that night the party relaxes for a bit, reports to Fallworth
- Elan and Sebastian go and do some shopping around town
- Sebastian finds an elixir to make Bessie’s milk ‘magical’
- Nikolaj has a chat with Rexfur
- Rexfur explains why he decided to resurrect Nikolaj
- He needed a willing subject, and Nikolaj was perfect
- It’s not like he had a lot of connections/people who’d miss him
- Rexfur wanted to change the status quo
- He says Helm and Erivo as too complacent
- Not sure if Nikolaj is reassured, but he's glad they had chat
- Meanwhile Roland is wondering who that priest was
- He stopped by Temple of Helm, but nobody fit description
- Roland prays to Helm for advice, gets a distant dream message
- Doesn’t sound like Helm wants to be involved in all this
- This mystery is bugging him
