DW Session 3: Sic Semper Tyrannus

General Summary

7/1/896

• Party arrives in Noggin, the capital of Elflands’ halfling territory
• It’s a vital port city and home to Mulane College, a massive bard school
• Queen Astrid will be supervising mission given recent events
• The first task will be to try and locate a bard named Cassandra
• Adam was told that she might have intel on the Characters
• The party explores Mulane College’s campus, lots of coffee shops
• They notice a guard who’s painting over a mural of Sebastian
• He tells them to swing by nearby guard station for intel on Cassandra
• Turns out she’s a server/performer at a nearby tavern called Bilbo’s!
• So the next stop is Bilbo’s, and Cassandra’s behind the counter
• Astrid gets a glass of wine, Adam gets a Joseph Daniels with her
• Adam finds out Joseph Daniels is a real person when Astrid mentions that she's met with him!!!
• Cereus orders a wine, tries flirting with Cassandra
• Turns out he’s too young :/
• Amara orders some strong grog, no gunpowder available
• Rolls a nat 20 when he asks about the Characters
• Cassandra tells him about a meeting that night
• Follow her to the spot after her concert
• The party listens to Cassandra’s show
• She sings about a halfling soldier abandoned by the Elflands
• Afterwards she goes to abandoned church building with the RKB not far behind
• Cereus stays at tavern to research Elflands history
• In the church’s basement the party gets surrounded by Characters agents
• Dozens of red-robed figures wearing tragedy/comedy masks stand on all sides of the room, looking down at them from bleachers
• One character in an angry mask labels them enemy of their group
• Urges party to confess to crime of leading to agent’s arrest
• If they confess, then there’s a chance for them to join group
• So the party tries to wiggle out of situation
• Astrid tries vouching them, but that doesn’t work
• Amara tries lying to Characters, that doesn’t work
• Adam is quietly judging group in corner, that doesn’t work
• Elan argues that they just need a chance to prove themselves
• It wouldn’t hurt to have an inside man, right?
• This works!
• Afterwards Cassandra assigns them their first Characters mission
• They have to murder a duke by the name of Coriolanus, distant relative of Empress Ophelia
• Adam asks more about Characters' philosophy
• He still hates how they’re interpreting Sebastian’s legacy
• That evening Queen Astrid and party get drunk
• Wine, Joseph, grog, you name it
• The party’s at a crossroads
• Does the party remain loyal to Elflands?
• They’re longtime allies of Gameth
• They can keep fighting against Characters
• Learn more about leadership and its goals
• Does the party start working for the Characters?
• Elflands is an aging, oppressive empire
• Change is needed, but is it too radical?
• Plus there are many mysteries w/ Characters
• If party joins them, Astrid would disavow them
• Must avoid diplomatic crisis, she needs deniability
• Consequences will shape world history
• So the party puts it to a vote
• Amara says they should join Characters
• What better way of finding out about them?
• And they’ll get to kill people
• Gell is in support of joining Characters too
• Living in Thork he saw Elflands’ oppression firsthand
• Elan is on the fence, but she decides to join Characters
• She sympathizes with group’s cause
• Free spirit and all
• Cereus feels similar too
• Adam is a vote against, but he’s overruled
• He’s still suspicious of Characters’ motives
• It’s an abuse to Sebastian’s good name, right?
• And with that, the party’s fate is decided
• In the morning they wake up and the Queen Astrid’s gone
• She’s left notes wishing them luck
• But also she distances herself from party’s actions
• And so the party begins working for the Characters
• Over the next couple days they gather intel on Duke Coriolanus VI
• He’s a bit of a playboy, likes to party and gamble
• There’s a party happening at a warehouse near the docks
• Elan and Amara will go inside to seduce him
• Adam and Gell will be outside to give him the jump
• That night the party turns out to be a lot of fun
• Elan does a fine job of convincing Duke to leave party
• She even gets him to leave his guards behind
• Elan takes him to empty building nearby
• Rest of party follows close behind
• In the room Gell pins Duke down, Adam slits his throat
• Amara leaves mask on Duke as calling card
• Guards come out in alley to search, Amara throws them off trail
• Back at the hotel the party finds a letter congratulating them on work
• Adam gets even more drunk, calls it early night
• Amara thanks him for all his hard work
• Cereus makes him a knockout sleeping potion
• A few days later the party returns to church basement w/ Cassandra
• It’s a formal initiation into the Characters
• Theater masks and red robes included!
• Their next assignment will take them back to Kassadeia
• The boat leaves tomorrow
