General Summary
9/1/897
- The party sails into harbor at the Free State of Thorvald
- Crownfall is the main shipping port before people enter Grettir, royalty is forbidden from entering the city
- The party doesn’t have much trouble making it inside the city after a talk with the guards
- Grettir is a bustling town of metalworking and high-rises with a massive arena in its center
- It was forged into the interior of a dormant volcano, and several goliaths and dragonborn work alongside the dwarves of Thorvald
- The party schedules a meeting with Allspeaker Thorstein the Grey, Jax facetimes with Paoli in the meantime
- As they’re waiting, the party sees Giovanni Rosso leave the palace chambers surrounded by a band of adventurers
- This is the guy that Paoli wants Jax to stab in the nuts for him
- Inside the palace chambers the party tells Thorstein about how they need help containing the threat of the Sunken God
- Thorstein’s amused since this is the exact same thing that Giovanni and his band of adventurers were requesting
- To keep with Thorvald’s tradition of fighting to tame the fires of Grettir’s volcano, they’ll host a tournament to see who can claim the powerful relic that can defeat the Sunken God
- It’s called the Iron Flask, a giant canteen with intricate dwarven metalworking adorning its exterior
- The party will have to fight in three different rounds against monsters summoned for the occasion
- In the final round, both teams will compete against each other to fight one monster and claim its trophy for their own
- The party spends the rest of the day finding any info they can on what they’ll be fighting in a couple days
- Helena and Jax go to the library, discover that giants have been used in a couple of matches
- Jax flirts with Helena some, she doesn’t seem to mind
- Flora goes to the largest temple in town, where a giant statue dedicated to Thorvald takes priority
- She speaks with the priest there who tells her that elementals have been used in previous matches
- Nobody seems able to tell the party what to expect for the final match though
- Later that night the party gets super wasted as the tournament looms ever nearer
- Jax has told Christopher about what Paoli wants him to do, so at the end of the night Jax will help Christopher escape at the docks of Crownfall
- Christopher’s thankful to spend one last night with his fellow shipmates and the party
- Cereus tries to hit on Margaret some, she gets freaked out when Jax tells her that Jones Burns is an undead wight
- Kacie flirts with Beleren some, but he definitely doesn’t take a hint
- That night Jax and Christopher go to the docks, Jax tries to make it look like Christopher got the jump on him and escaped from the tavern
- The Sardivelian merchants in the tavern caught on to this ruse, vow that they’ll tell Paoli about this episode
- Jax pays the bartender for some drinks and his secrecy with the Decanter of Endless Water (he gave all his money to Luuk)
- Finally, it’s time for the tournament
- The first round is against a couple of Galeb Duhr and an Earth Elemental
- No real issues from this round, even after one Galeb Duhr summons a couple of allies
- At the end of the match Cereus notices that Radovan the Killer is present in the audience
- In between matches the party runs into Giovanni’s ‘Sardivelian Brigade of Knights’
- It seems like they’re doing it for the money or personal reasons, not because they’re loyal to Giovanni
- The second round is a little tougher against two frost giants
- Some disputes come up over the randomness of monster attacks, but regardless the giants can deal a wollop of damage when they attack anyone besides Jax
- Cereus gets KO’d twice, revived twice by Flora
- But both giants are eventually chopped down by Jax’s Redemption
- Radovan is still in the audience
- The third round is a doozy
- Thorstein summons his grandfather, Thorvald, to fight both parties
- He’s now a gigantic celestial with the powers of a Solar...
