DW Sidequest 1: Great Old Ones
General Summary
11/2/896
- First, Veridan decides to ditch the party
- He’s not a fan of all the violence and ‘shedding blood’
- Plus he didn’t like being accused as a double agent by Cassandra
- He cast an illusion spell and sneaked out in the middle of the night
- Left a note for the party to find
- Cassandra is royally pissed by the betrayal
- Vents and fumes all the way to Grendel
- Party arrives in Grendel, a small farming village on outskirts of Thork
- Cassandra has to meet with Characters agents to find new party member
- They find a replacement, but he’s a little on the weird side
- Goes by the name Wilbur Whately, very intense and creepy
- Amara has to go and help him at a Temple of Seevo in the mountains
- Why is it in the mountains?
- They’re suspicious of each other, but they agree to work together
- At Temple gate Amara finds an elven watchtower
- Guards are away, but they’ll arrive soon
- There’s a key to the temple in the watchtower
- Inside Wilbur and Amara find a desecrated temple
- Pews destroyed, statue of Seevo in ruins
- Wilbur senses magic, uses force hand to find secret door switch
- The two of them discover a secret passageway leading deep into the mountainside
- The walls are covered in ancient murals, abyssal writings
- It’s the story of the Ostry Apocalypse
- When monstrous deities invaded Ekal
- At the end of the tunnel the cavern opens into wide pool
- A giant tomb/statue of an aboleth looms over the pool
- Party investigates cavern, accidentally summons two chuuls
- But Wilbur speaks to them in abyssal to stop a fight
- The two chuuls are Dome and Helix
- They’re quite friendly, willing to talk about good old days during the Ostry Apocalypse
- They’re waiting for their ‘boss’ to wake back up
- Wilbur and Amara tell them about surface world
- Dome and Helix make them some musty tea, exchange gifts
- Amara is given some tablets to study Abyssal with
- Wilbur is given a paralysis wand
- Before they leave, Dome asks if they’ll take Helix with them
- Helix didn’t get to see much of world during the Apocalypse
- He only saw the defeats and retreats at the end
- Party is unsure, but they eventually agree
- Outside the two elven sentries are back at the watchtower
- They absolutely freak out when they see Helix
- The fight is nasty, brutish, and short
- Wilbur pushes one guard down mountainside with an eldritch blast
- Amara slices up the other guy real bad
- Helix finishes it off by eating the guard’s face
- In the end Wilbur sucks up the guard’s soul
- He gets valuable intel about Thork and fighting there
- Only a criminal can sneak inside
- On way back to Grendel Wilbur and Amara bond some more
- Turns out they both have monstrous patron deities
- And together they might just find a way to bring them back
