EooD Session 11: Kipp's Last Battle
General Summary
12/3/900
At the end of the previous session, Cig, Kipp, and Kirby were thrown into an encounter with a creature that claimed to be the blacksmith Mormo who had disappeared from the ranch several weeks ago. Kirby immediately sensed something off about Mormo, and a fight ensued when the creature realized that the party members were not believing his disguise. The creature revealed itself its true form, breaking every bone in its body and frightening Kirby into the nearby cattle pen. The three adventurers spent several seconds fending the creature off all on their own, Lilith powered down near the wagon and Giga sleeping peacefully in Pelaios' estate. To make matters worse, the creature posing as Mormo was soon reinforced by a band of drow raiders rushing in from all sides of the ranch. The raid leader set fire to the living quarters, threatening the party to abandon their quest or face severe consequences. What unnerved Cig and the others the most was that the drow leader knew all of the party's aliases they'd been testing out for the past few months. When Kipp landed a blow on the creature, the stormlike clatter of the blow woke everybody up in the ranch and alerted them to the monster in their midst. Giga ran over to the windows to get a clear view of the fight, and Kali rushed out of her private home with her pistol drawn to join in the fight. The Mormo pretender was slayed by a devastating blow from Cig, but the party remained surrounded by dark elves. Cedar fended fought off one of the raiders with the help of Kirby's summoned boar and Kali's pistol shots while the rest of the group focused its attacks on the raid leader and his second-in-command. Kirby's spellcasting incapacitated the leader, but not before he managed to stab Kipp to death with his poisoned blades. Kipp's plate armor, purchased from a shifty Sardivelian in Qilthani, proved to be her undoing: while it defended her against slashing attacks, it left her vulnerable to weapons with piercing capabilities like the raid leader's shortswords. Unable to stabilize, the brave paladin died in the main square of Pelaios Ranch. Assisted from afar by Giga's spell attacks, the party dispatched with the drow raiders not long after Kipp's passing. The last dark elf, surrounded by enemies on all sides, slit his throat before the party could do it for him. The surviving ranch hands stumbled out of the burning buildings, Cig rushing over to heal them before Kali and Pelaios took over to assess the damage of the latest drow attack. More than half of the ranch was now burned down, and only a quarter of the ranch's staff was still alive. Cig promised to request reinforcements for the ranch, but Kali and Pelaios both knew they were looking at a brutal winter under these conditions. After the fight Kirby and the others helped bury Kipp's body beneath a hill on the outskirts of the ranch, paying their final respects to a reliable fighter and friend. Kirby poured out some of the fine elven wine he'd picked up from the ghost ship in her honor, and Cedar braided a small necklace with Kipp's hair and a piece of her horn. Exhausted from a long day of fighting, Giga and Kirby both tried to get some sleep for the night. Cedar, restless after the death of her closest friend in the party, spent the rest of the night tracing the footprints of the drow raiders back to their campsite several miles away from the ranch. Hours of investigating helped her determine what kind of food they had eaten before the raid, but she couldn't find any more footprints to indicate where the raiders had come from before setting up camp. She spent msot of the morning watching the site to see if any more drow showed up, but nobody came. Exhausted and frustrated, she flew back to camp for some much-needed rest. In the middle of the night before taking a long rest, Cig called up Director Astara Hadad to tell her all about the drow raid and Kipp's death. When she learned about how the drow knew the party's aliases, she assumed that Naberius must be involved in some capacity. Now wide awake with Cig's info dump, Astara explained how Naberius was a devil found in connection with several of the party's past missions. The devil fought outside of Hedera's bookstore had mentioned Naberius by name, and the gnolls in Qilthani's wilderness said they'd received their suits and playing cards from the devil. Astara sensed some conspiracy was afoot, and if the Verschow's dark elves were involved than the the plot went even deeper than she thought. Cig made a mental note of all the information, confirming his belief that finding Hedera in Rel-Kadrar was the group's highest priority now. The next morning Cig told the rest of the party about Astara's suspicions and how there might be a mole somewhere leaking info about the group to Naberius. Kirby agreed about the seriousness of the issue, and he began packing up the wagon to leave Pelaios Ranch that evening after picking up a vial of drow poison from the ranch's armory. In the afternoon an exhausted fluttered back to the ranch, and after seeing Giga's blase reaction to Kipp's death she got into a heated encounter with the gnome. Giga had only been with the group for a couple of weeks and hadn't built up any of the connections, but for Cedar the death of Kipp brought a lot of traumatic memories back to the surface. Kali recommended the party travel northwest towards Fort Reverence to restock on supplies, and with a couple of broken-down warforgeds in the back of the wagon the party continued its journey west despite simmering tensions.
