EooD Session 17: The Trains Run On Time

General Summary

Month 13, Week 3, Year 900
The party found themselves in a vicious battle with a pack of drow bandits, a war of inches as each side pushed the other down the train carts. Father Eli managed to convince the lead drow bandit to leave the train cart, but that still left half a dozen giant spiders and two dark elves left to fight. Meanwhile Cig hopped onto Fluffy and started chasing down the train, sparring with the lead drow in a bitter stalemate.    With Damakos from the Regulated Steel militia assisting from the rear, Rakka's Heroes slayed the horde of giant spiders terrorizing the train. Eli and Xalix were both paralyzed by spider venom, but Seraphina and Christopher managed to kill most of them with well-placed shots. It wasn't long after that when Seraphina was knocked out by a blow from the last surviving drow aboard the train, but circumstances outside the train were turning the battle in the party's favor. Cig managed to capture the lead drow in his net, dealing immense amounts of damage by dragging the dark elf through the gravelly dirt near the tracks. Noticing the events outside, Cedar opened a train car window a fired off a 'Lightning Bolt' spell in a straight line, killing the drow but also inflicting serious wounds to Cig and his worg familiar.    As Fluffy clambered on board with Cig's unconscious body, the last surviving dark elf leapt off the train and escaped parting crossbow shots from Christopher and Damakos. Cedar reluctantly revived Cig, and soon afterwards experienced the psychic damage of the geas rings for intentionally hurting a fellow party member. Cig lay hands on Seraphina and the paralyzed adventurers, storing the scorched body of the drow leader away for safekeeping. He thought that Eli would be able to communicate with the dead, but later on in Rel-Kadrar the bard confessed that he lacked the power to have the corpses talk back to him.    Astara met with the party afterwards in her cloak of billowing, her and Naamah kept safe by the party's prescient decision to move them into a different cabin before the fight. Cig and Seraphina were starting to get suspicious about the small number of Regulated Steel agents aboard the train, especially after a recent increase of drow attacks in Rakka's frontier. Astara gave the party time to rest and prepare for their arrival in Rel-Kadrar, Father Eli going cabin-to-cabin to meet with the traumatized survivors of the drow massacre. A tiefling named Vissago talked about seeing his wife murdered in front of him by a giant spider, confessing that he was too scared to even defend her and ducked beneath a table. Eli told the young tiefling to embrace those feelings and hold onto better memories of his wife from their early romantic years in the capital.    A couple hours later, the party arrived in the great industrial powerhouse of Rel-Kadrar. Massive factories and tenements littered the edges of the city while wealthy shops and high-rises loomed from its commercial center. Packing up their belongings, the party took a carriage ride to their future accommodations while Director Astara explained the need for the group to make an appearance at the city's New Year's Eve celebration. Rakka's leaders and wealthy industrialists would be attending the gala, giving them a chance to charm the people with control over the party's future income while potentially learning more about the city's political situation.    The group, more used to adventures in dark sewers and rugged wastelands, demurred at the prospect of wearing stuffy outfits and kissing up to nobles. Cig worried the gala would be the perfect opportunity for a drow attack if Rakka's leader Jalil Hafiz was going to make an appearance, and Seraphina suggested that half of the group could be investigating leads on Hedera and Naberius while the other half suffered through an upscale party. Astara considered the idea, letting the rest of the group fill Father Eli in on the devilish conspiracy the group had uncovered over several months of adventuring.    Finally, the group arrived at a multi-storied inn painted with fresh coats of red and black. The Red Coals, the fanciest hotel in Rel-Kadrar, would be the party's base of operations during their stay in the city. Cig convinced the receptionist to make sure that everybody in the group was staying on the same floor, but Fluffy was forced to sleep at a local pet shelter across the street. Rooms were divvied up, Christopher expressed concern that some Sardivelians might show up at the party, and Cedar bought a Earth Elemental Gem from a nearby magic shop.    Eli took the time to stake out some good spots for a sermon near the hotel, and Seraphina spent the whole night exploring the city and searching for possible contacts and leads on the devilish conspiracy. She ordered some dangerously strong drinks at a run-down tavern known as Clankers, making fast friends with the bartender and catching the attention of a band of kenku a few tables over. Cig had told her that they needed to get in touch with some members of the Silver Beak while in town, and Seraphina made sure to introduce herself  to them before heading on to her next stop.    Cig believed that Gusty had ordered a cursed book from a store known as The Staves in Rel-Kadrar, and Seraphina tried to sneak into the building despite several shots of hard liquor. Taking a roundabout route into the bookstore, the halfling rogue broke into an adjacent cigar shop and tried to sneak in through a back door. The door in the cigar shop's back room was locked by some type of spell, and Seraphina was forced to scurry out of the shop before alerting its owner. She climbed back up to the Red Coals' fourth floor and back into her room, just an hour before the party members woke to discuss their strategy for exploring the city and finding Hedera.
