EooD Session 8: Sailing Into Oblivion, Pt. 2
General Summary
11/3/900
After dealing with the ghosts terrorizing The Partridge, Rakka's Heroes prepared to board the ghost ship sailing in a thick cloud of blue-green fog. Once the kenku pirate ship got within 100 ft of the ghost ship the party took a rowboat and started rowing towards the ruined elven vessel. Guang Chirp loaned the party two kenku pirates to assist them in the upcoming fight. Struggling at first to climb up the dilapidated planks on the side of the ship, the party finally made it to the ship's top deck and investigated the wreckage. Not a soul was in sight, broken masts creaking overhead with a staircase leading into total darkness in the deck's center. A cabin with shattered windows rested at the far end of the ship, so Cig, Kirby, and Kipp decided to investigate there first while Damon, Zephyr, and Cedar stayed behind near the edge of the ship. Pushing the door open with a wretched groan, the party caught sight of a spectral figure looming above a ruined desk. Despite years of undeath, the wraithlike spirit maintained its elven features as it glared at the party with its piercing green eyes. Stalking out of the cabin, the party tried negotiating with the wraith to try and stop it from terrorizing ships around Qilthani. The party's pleas fell on deaf ears as the wraith appeared hellbent on laying waste to the nation of Rakka. Naming itself as Petruchio Avon of the Elflands, the wraith said it was on a mission to avenge his homeland for Rakka's complacency during the Sunken God's reign of terror in 897. The wraith would allow the party to leave in peace if they offered up the tieflings Kirby and Kipp as sacrifices, but as negotiations fell through a fight ensued. Half a dozen specters showed up on the ship's top deck, Petruchio urging them to kill the tieflings first. Kipp and Kirby both cast enchantments to scare the spirits away, forcing the specters to haunt Zephyr and Damon and the two kenku pirates. One of the kenkus died after a series of necrotic touches, and Zephyr fell a few rounds later after being surrounded by half a dozen specters. Damon himself nearly went down when one ghost lunged towards him near the masts, so he decided to cash in his favor with his patron devil and vanished through a portal off the ship. Cedar, who had leaped inside his pocket to hide from the ghosts, was transported through the portal's bluish flames as well. Kipp, Kirby, Cig, and a kenku named Liang Squawk were left to fight an entire army of undead spirits on their own. For several moments it appeared as though the party would die aboard this ghost ship, but slowly they began to turn the tide in their favor. Squawk the kenku bravely fought off five specters at a single time, and despite laying one of them to rest he proved no match for their relentless waves of necrotic energy. Petruchio the wraith was still frightened by Kirby and Kipp, giving the party time to corner him in his cabin and lob several attacks against him. Kirby delivered a parting 'Vicious Mockery' before plunging through a porthole into the icy waters of the Arrayas Ocean while Cig delivered the killing blow to this corrupted elven spirit. Half of the specters vanished after the defeat of their leader, giving the party the opportunity they needed to defeat the remaining forces and clear out the ghost ship. With Petruchio defeated, the ship lost the ethereal energy keeping it afloat and began to sink. Kirby and Cig managed to collect a handful of items from items around the ship before fleeing for the rowboat: Squawk's ashes, Zephyr's dead body, Petruchio's personal records, three bottles of fine elven wine from the Golden Forests, 26GP, and a ceremonial elven blade. The ship fell into the Arrayas Ocean in a matter of minutes, and the party rowed back to The Partridge to report their success to Chirp. The First Mate was crestfallen to see both kenku fighters dead, but he thanked the party for their valiant efforts and for returning with some vestiges of the brave fighter Squawk. Cig called up Director Astara to tell her about the mission's success before everybody took a much-need long rest. For two weeks the party recovered from its brush with death, Kirby crafting the first draft of a ballad in honor of the brave kenku Squawk. One afternoon Chirp met with the party in the mess hall to tell them that he knew Damon Kovel was responsible for killing several Silver Beak agents outside of Qilthani. Knowing that Damon would be a difficult enemy for the party to confront, he gave the party an offer to redeem themselves: steal the plans for an experimental airship from Rel-Kadrar, and the party would be paid generously and forgiven of its past transgressions. Each folder on the airship would be worth 2,000GP split among the party, and an agent known as the The Red Whisper from a different theives guild would assist them on the mission in Rel-Kadrar. Kipp left the mess hall without a response, but Cig said the party would do what they could to help the Silver Beak. Pleased with the response, Chirp taught Cig a code to speak to any kenkus who may be working for the Silver Beak: when you see a kenku, ask them 'Have you polished your beak laetely?". If they offer you a glass of mead, then that's a sign they're a member of the Silver Beak. If they offer anything other than mead, it's no good. 12/1/900 Cig memorized this information, and a couple of days later the party arrived back in the city of Qilthani. They first stopped by Mayor Proserpine's office to collect their reward, 950GP each along with 6 horses and a carriage to use on future missions. Proserpine appeared in a good mood, offering the party champagne and celebrating a productive end-of-the-year shipping season now that the region's major threats had been eliminated by Rakka's Heroes. Between drinks she told the party about future assignments, the largest of which was an international mission in the dwarven Free State of Thorvald. A huge monster was laying waste to several mining settlements in the Katlan Mtns, and a 10,000GP bounty would be split among the adventurers who managed to defeat the monster. Still reeling from the diplomatic crisis ignited by Zilocke's elven massacre, the mission would prove that Rakka's Heroes was a force for international good and that it could work with adventurers from other countries. Proserpine also ordered her secretary Naamah to make copies of several more bounties available for the party. The aasimar Hedera was still at large, and the city of Qilthani would reward the party 1,000GP for finding her. Additionally, a bullywug merchant named Gorf Sunko was wanted in connection to Zilocke's massacre with a 1,500GP bounty on his head. Hedera was rumored to have been seen moving to Rel-Kadrar, and some merchants at Warehouse 8 said they expected Gorf to hide out in Rel-Avery until the bounty blew over. Pleased with these new job opportunities, the remaining members of the party made their way over to Warehouse 8 and Qilthani's industrial district to finds some magic items for sale. The marketplace was still on edge after the crackdown from Zilocke's purchasing of a Sunken God relic, but Kirby managed to purchase a rust-colored Bag of Tricks from a tiefling merchant after a round of good-natured haggling. Later that day the party visited the forge of a renowned Sardivelian merchant named Antony Vivaldi to find some enchanted armors to use in future encounters. Kirby demurred on a pair of bracers that only worked if used by an unarmored fighter, but Kipp bought a set of enchanted plate armor with a small loan from her allies. The merchant showed how the armor was resistant to weapon attacks, and the party had the armor shipped to the The Laughing Gnoll once the purchase was complete. Back at their old drinking grounds Decarabia Goldeneye celebrated the return of Rakka's Heroes with a round of drinks on the house. Kirby buried Zephyr's body in the alley outside, checking through his pockets and nearly passed out when an action figure-sized warforged in Zephyr's pouch turned into a six-foot-tall warforged in a matter of seconds. Deciding to deal with the giant warforged later, Kirby had another round of drinks with the party as they celebrated their first night back in Qilthani in over a month. Meanwhile, Damon and Cig hid out on the edges of the city and did odd jobs around town. Assuming the party died fighting Petruchio, Damon collected his 850GP from Prosperine but laid low after her office started asking questions about the real survival rates of the mission. He did some work for his devil patron, bracing for the inevitable confrontation with the rest of the party. Cedar had a more enjoyable time in Qilthani. While she didn't visit city hall to collect her payment for the mission to defeat the specters, she made a small fortune killing rats around town as a fey exterminator. She flirted with some of her clients, and one night she had dinner with Sniffles the goblin. They reminisced about their time together traveling to Qilthani and how their lives had changed since then, staring up at the stars atop an inn one night before fading to black. Cig, Kipp, and Kirby would have a lot of questions for Cedar and Damon when they finally reunited.
