Personal history
For hundreds of years, elvenkind had kept to the forests and isolated themselves from the intrigues of global affairs. This policy served them well during the 2nd Cycle's violent succession wars of the Myltev Empire, but it failed to prepare them for the Ostry Apocalypse and the horde of monstrous deities that terrorized the world. The elves weren't aware of the threat until the aberrations were right at their doorstep, threatening to raze the forests and slaughter every living creature they came across.
After the creation of The Ageless One and its Banishing Smite on the monstrous deities, the world's surviving elves managed to regroup and repopulate their devastated forests. While many elves were content to stay near the forests and rebuild the world's fragile ecosystem, a new generation of elves believed that their race should play a larger role in global affairs. Laertes Avon, a nobleman from a family that could trace its lineage back to the waning years of the 1st Cycle, became the leader of this elven interventionism and urged the high elves of the Golden Forests to take more efforts to stabilize Southern Pescat in the wake of the Ostry Apocalypse.
Over the course of many centuries, the so-called Elflands stretched its empire across thousands of miles and brought peace and prosperity to the devastated region. Laertes brokered treaties with the neighboring halfling and goblinkin, founding the city of Kassædeia as a neutral territory where races from all over Pescaliat could assemble and work towards rebuilding from the Ostry Apocalypse. Tribes of dragonborn and orcs proved suspicious of the new elven kingdom, but Laertes chose diplomacy over combat on every occasion to maintain peace within the region. With the remnants of the Myltev Empire devolved into petty feuds and squabbling, the Elflands became the undisputed leader of Southern Pescat in the post-Apocalypse years.
By the final century of Laertes' reign, the Elflands Empire stretched thousands of miles from the Vitellian River all the way east to the Strait of Myltev. Even in his final years Laertes worked towards regional stability, instilling his son Fortinbras with the importance of a unified Elflands. His son would remember these warnings as he began his campaigns to double the Elflands' size and triple the Empire's populations in a matter of decades.
