Gian Lorenzo Bernini
Gian Lorenzo Bernini was an Italian artist and a prominent architect who worked principally in Rome. He was the leading sculptor of his age, credited with creating the Baroque style of sculpture. As an architect, he was responsible for the construction of the piazza outside St. Peter's Basilica, as well as the massive Baldachin over the high altar inside the Basilica. His works in sculpture, such as "Apollo and Daphne," "David," and "The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa," are characterized by their dynamic movement and dramatic realism.
