Stoan Falls
Stoan Falls is the largest waterfall on the northern tributaries linking Lake Crystalmere to the Tanquary River. A clever set of lifts and similar contraptions allows goods to flow by river north of here, either by hauling the entire boat up or down the cliff or by simply moving the goods and transferring them to other boats, but Stoan is simply too high to allow for this. Thankfully the river southwards is relatively placid, even small ocean-bound brigs and corvettes have been known to make the journey as high upriver as Stoan.
The locals have a difficult, dangerous, and lucrative industry simply moving goods up and down the cliff. The work unions here have made an oddly altruistic use of their monopoly. Slavery is prohibited in the duchy of Piztovtolos, and while it can be difficult to enforce any laws in the mountain wilderness, the locals pride themselves on being a 'free town of free people'. Any person who sets foot in Stoan is presumed free and the town will refuse to recognise any ownership claims over them, whatever nation they originate from. They have little way of protecting themselves against someone determined to retrieve their property, but they are very willing to use economic weapons. Any merchant who is known to have brought a slave to Stoan or who employs slave labour, or anyone even associated with such a merchant, will be effectively barred from trading to Pizol Springs as the Stoan locals will refuse to move their goods.
