Oath of Steel

Paladins who swear the Oath of Steel dedicate their lives to becoming masters of combat. Often given the title of Blade Master, these paragons of battle strive for mastery with the armaments of war. Some serve as mercenaries, and others as guardians or bodyguards. However, no matter their station, Paladins of Steel always look to test their martial skill.

Tenets of Devotion

1st-Level Paladin (Oath of Steel) Feature

Though their specific oath and cause may vary, all paladins who swear an Oath of Steel uphold the tenets below:
Strive for Excellence. The purpose of life is to achieve martial perfection. You are a weapon, and honing that weapon is honing your very soul towards divinity.
Respect the Steel.A weapon is an instrument of destruction and it deserves respect. Drawing your weapon frivolously is to turn it into a decoration; if you draw your weapon, you must be ready to use it.
Walk Together. There is only so much you can learn on your own. Learn from the techniques and philosophy of those around you. Lend a hand to others striving for perfection, and in turn they will extend their hands to you.

Martial Exploits

1st-Level Paladin (Oath of Steel) Feature

You have studied various exploits to increase your skill with the armaments of war. You gain the following features:

Exploit Dice

The Steel Exploits table shows how many Exploit Dice you have to use Exploits. To use an Exploit, you expend an Exploit Die, and you regain all your expended Exploit Dice when you finish a short or long rest.

High Degree

Your Paladin level limits the technicality of the Exploits you are able to perform. This limit is reflected in the High Degree column of the Steel Exploits table.

Exploits

You learn two Martial Exploits of your choice from those available to the Fighter. You can only use one Exploit per ability check, attack, or saving throw.   Whenever you would learn a new Martial Exploit, you may also replace one of the Exploits you know with another Exploit of your choice.

Saving Throws

If an Exploit requires a saving throw, the saving throw DC is calculated as follows:
Exploit save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Strength modifier

Channel Divinity: Sacred Duel

3rd-Level Paladin (Oath of Steel) Feature

As a bonus action, you can hold aloft your holy symbol to begin a sacred duel between you and another creature that agrees to the duel within 30 feet of you, designating you as duelists.   For 1 minute, or until one of the duelists falls unconscious, you both have resistance to all damage, except damage from the other duelist, but can only target each other with your attacks, spells, and other features for the duration.

Channel Divinity: Perfected Strike

3rd-Level Paladin (Oath of Steel) Feature

Whenever you use Divine Smite, you can use your Channel Divinity to draw upon your martial prowess, perfecting the strike against your foe. The target must make a Dexterity saving throw, along with the normal effects of Divine Smite. On a failed save, the damage for your Divine Smite is maximized. When you use this feature, all damage from your Divine Smite is changed to the damage type of your weapon.

Aura of Lethality

7th-Level Paladin (Oath of Steel) Feature

Your presence exudes lethal power, awakening a sense of mortality in creatures near you. Whenever a creature affected by your Aura of Protection hits another creature within the range of your Aura with a critical hit, the creature hit must make a Wisdom saving throw against your spell save DC or be frightened for 1 minute (save ends).

Skillful Counter

15th-Level Paladin (Oath of Steel) Feature

You ruthlessly strike back at those who dare strike you. When a creature you can see hits you with a melee attack, you can use your reaction to make a single weapon attack against it.   If this attacker is your opponent in a Sacred Duel, you also gain a single Exploit Die that you expend as part of this special reaction attack. If you do not expend the die, you lose it.

Warrior of Legend

20th-Level Paladin (Oath of Steel) Feature

You can use a bonus action on your turn to enter a trance that enhances your combat skills to legendary levels. For 1 minute, or until you fall unconscious, you can use one Exploit you know as part of each melee weapon attack you make without expending an Exploit Die. If the Exploit requires an Exploit Die roll, you can choose to expend an Exploit Die. If you do not, use a d6 as the Exploit Die.   Once you use this feature, you must complete a long rest before you can use it again. When you have no uses left, you can expend a 5th-level spell slot to use this feature again.
