Aulorian Nailo

Aulorian Nailo

A wood elf who finds as much peace among high boughs as he does in the crows nest, Aulorian is as often editing his designs for ships in his journal as he is devoting himself to whatever task is at hand. Unafraid of dirty hands, he will often be found with tools of his trade either close to, or in hand. He is as defensive of his fellow crew and citizens as he is of the trees and ships borne of them.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Always quick to make friends, even if he had no business in the circles he ran in, Aulorian had a number of regrets by the turn of his first century some decades ago. Taking these hardships in stride, he learned to become the type of friend to others that he had been looking for himself.   Always willing to lend himself to the assistance of others, he keeps a grin, a hand, a chuckle or a kind word ready to help others lift anything from an dropped anchor to a worn spirit. He had once, long ago fancied himself a marine, but found that hard-stakes, disciplined lifestyle a bit too grating and opted out, choosing instead to design the vessels such souls would convey themselves upon.   He secretly dreams of finding a means of sailing the open skies, as the altitude of his home would lend itself as readily (if not more readily) to such vessels, should their secrets ever be revealed to him, though he is grounded enough to know it may never come to pass. Still, he deems it a dream worth chasing. Besides, who knows what rides tomorrow's tides?

Education

He has trained in the way of blades with the members of the Keel in his brief flirtation with their lifestyle, but as mentioned, he opted for a different life path, though he maintained a love for the sea.   It was upon his initial voyage with the Keel he became fast friends with the ship's carpenter, a half-human that taught Aulorian all he knew of building and maintaining ships, and helped Master Nailo build a dinghy of his own design, who's maiden voyage was the one that saw him back to the Near Grave, where he formalized and advanced his education to a full shipwright.   He considers his education ongoing, an adage of his first mentor's ever echoingvtwixt his ears; learn from everyone you meet, even if all they can teach is what not to do.

Employment

Splits his time on the trade routes, at the shipyards, sojourning the local woods, or working the docks, investing himself into every layer of ship life he has the constitution for.   While sailing, he might simply be serving as an extra deckhand, a carpenter, a lookout (though he isnt ideal at it), or even as hired protection (or tasked with usi g his blades and bow more offensively)   If working the shipyards, he is either ensuring the proper level of craftsmanship of his own templates, or (bemoaningly) subjecting his talent to the project of another's design. His reputation for never turning out shoddy work was built honestly, and usually bought at the price of his critical eye oft being distracted by the sub-par effort of those around him.   If on the docks, he is likely the eye assigned to keep lazier workers on task and productive. Though he lacks much of the bulk of some of his lager fellows in this field, his efficiency and gumption more than make up his lack of physique.   He is currently between jobs, and, sensing a bit of restlessness, open to some sort of adventure.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Has designed a number of ships (some under debate as a few designs he had unfinished had been copied or outright stolen and passed off as another's once he had been marooned half a century ago, and he still to this day has trouble recieving his due recognition for his creativity, but he does not let it embitter himself; he designs for the love of the craft. Any fame, no matter how deserving, is of secondary import at best.

Failures & Embarrassments

Has been marooned, swindled, cheated, derided, and overlooked more tames than he is comfortable admitting. There are now some ships he will not sail, some crews he will not join, and to this day, still feels a twinge of shame for opting out of the marine life, even though part of him was, and to this day remains convinced he would be trusted beyond his ability to perform, leading to the disasterous casualties among those he would be assigned with, had such a life remined his.

Mental Trauma

His relatives see the shipping industry as anathema to their simple woodland life, and have no qualms about targetting him specifically as their focus for the ire they bear any who would desecrate the sanctity of the trees. He may as well be turning their home-trees into a canoe the way they talk about him.

Quick of wit and foot, Aulorian serves his community as a shipwright, though his wanderlust sees him sailing his own and others' designs, fueling his creative impetus. Often makes fast friends, sometimes with the wrong crowd.
