Aetius Sanctificus

At first glance, Aetius looks the part of a crooked old man. Upon closer inspection you notice that his gaze, framed by bushy white eyebrows, belies a power and confidence that is unusual in the elderly. His hair is pulled back in gray dreadlocks, tied together with bits of discarded string and other refuse. His frail frame is draped in oversized robes, giving you the impression of a discarded marionette. All manner of stains cover his robes, an inattentiveness to cleanliness that speaks to a mind that is bent on greater matters. His gnarled, pallid hands grasp a twisted staff that seems like an extension of his bony arms. Despite his under whelming appearance, he walks with conviction and purpose.

Personal history

Aetius originally came from a very supportive home in Cragwood where his mother took care of the children and father worked in the Church of the AllFather as a cleric of small repute. While this gave him a solid foundation on which to build a solid moral code, it also gave him a glimpse into the murky underpinnings of church politics. These practices have always stuck in his craw, and even now delights in tormenting clerics whenever possible. He wasn’t as interested in fishing and sports as the other boys, often trying to read as much as possible. He especially enjoyed the fantastic stories from heroes long since dead. He eventually worked as a librarian and took a wife, yielding but a single offspring. His son Hermes was his pride and joy. Hermes was everything that Aetius was not. He was strong, athletic and charismatic. It was with a father’s pride that Aetius watched him turn into a man. Aetius continued his work as a librarian during this time and began to earn a reputation for his great knowledge. Some even considered him a sage. While his information was nearly always correct, Aetius had a limited amount of common sense.   His son hadn’t been married a decade when his son’s family was torn asunder by the Unmade menace. His daughter-in-law and grandchildren were slaughtered and his son was taken, presumably re-created into an Unmade abomination. It nearly broke Aetius, but he vowed to exact a pound of flesh from his new enemies and try to find a way to stop, or better yet, reverse the process of creating Unmade. By this time in his life however, Aetius was not as physically capable. Age had taken its toll on the once vibrant man, and he could not count on raising a sword and shield to aid in his cause. That is when he turned to books in an attempt to find any information that might help him achieve his goal. The further he dug, the more obscure the references became, and the more the sources called for magic. When he turned to Lyceum Academy for help, he never realized that wizarding would come so naturally to him. This gave him enormous hope, but the path to becoming an all-powerful mage promised to be a long and arduous one. Aetius accepted the challenge, having nothing else to live for. His elementary studies certainly took a further toll on his body. He stayed the course however; confident in the knowledge and power that was steadily growing within him. It was during this time that Simeon Gohanach, the headmaster of Lyceum Academy, and Aetius became close friends.   Even though many did not think it prudent, Headmaster Simeon offered the newly relinquished post of Head Wizard at Castle Blackfist. Even though it was an honour to be selected, Aetius wasn’t initially receptive to the idea. He had a comfortable life in Seaquen, but was intrigued by the prospect of having his own laboratory and library. The biggest impetus for Aetius to make the jump to Castle Blackfist was his son. He knew that the resources offered to him there would be unparalleled in finding out more about the Unmade and it was this fact that cemented the deal in his mind.

Employment

Presently, Aetius is the new resident mage of Castle Blackfist. He spends his days in service to the castle and Commander Sandip Isaacson, trying his best to fill the enormous shoes left by his predecessor. In his free time his tries to make Father Loic Noir's life as interesting as it can be while winking at all the skirts strolling by. He enjoys spending his evenings with a good book and an exotic tea. He is hoping that his time here will hone his arcane aptitude to a level beyond any so that he can bring that power to bear in the name of truth, justice and peace for all.

Vices & Personality flaws

Condescending and egotistical. Has no patience for those he feels are inferior to him. Everything is black and white and thus has little compassion for those who have stepped over the line.

Personality Quirks

Very well spoken with a commanding, booming voice. His eyebrows often bunch in the middle of his forehead as he bites his lip in concentration, eyes downcast when pondering a problem. He often points with his finger or staff at others or things that he is talking about.

Belief/Deity
Non-Denominational. Aetius does not have the time for organized religion. He feels that priests and believers use religion as a crutch that blinds them from taking charge of their lives.
