Jonoi Hillmen - Human

Jonoi is a name for a race of men living in the Jonoi Highlands.

History

When the Kingdom of Morrus expanded through Dradolin to the Jonoi Highlands, the Jonoi were a loose association of clans. Some welcomed the Kingdom while others did not. For the most part, the Jonoi kept to their old ways, living in the highlands and herding their sheep and cattle. But those in the towns quickly were absorbed into the culture of the new settlers. In time, there was little difference between Jonoi city men and those of the Kingdom. Some resented the Kingdom, though, and resistance became war. The rebellion was quickly crushed but a remnant chose neither to bow before the Kingdom of Morrus nor fight and fled west to new homes beyond the control of the Kingdom.   Jonoi who live in the Kingdom have taken much from the Kingdom, the religions, and most of their language, but there is much of the old ways the Jonoi keep despite Kingdom influence. The Jonoi beliefs in honor, duty, and the greater truths of existence are surprisingly silimar to the Qvi Belli.   The ancestors of the Jonoi breed the large canines known as the Beasthounds, used to protect the Jonoi villages and especially for hunting the wild wyverns common to the highlands. Those who have mastered the hounds are known as Beasthunters.

Physical Description

Tall, broad of shoulder and with a natural survival instinct, Jonoi are thick, tough, and hardy. They wear kilts and are typically dark haired, gruff, and brook no insult. Tatoos are common among both sexes. Beasthunters wear stylized iron masks.

Society

Reverence to tradition, honor, and belief in fate are central tenets of Jonoi society.

Relations

Most people are intimidated by Jonoi when they first meet them—they are physically intimidating, after all. This does not make them savages however, and once known they can become fast allies. Jonoi trust has to be earned and isn’t freely given.

Alignment and Religion

While Chaotic alignments among the Jonoi aren’t entirely unknown, most tend to be Lawful and Neutral. They primarily worship The Mother.

Adventurers

The toughness of the Jonoi make them ideal adventurers, and their survival instincts make them capable explorers. At home in the wilds, they readily serve as scouts, hunters, and trackers.
