Highsun

History

The month of Highsun is named so because of the large heatwave that radiates from the sun over Avalonia during this time of the year. The days are long and beautiful while the nights are warm and welcoming. This month the whole of Avalonia worship Solis (God)'s light and give thanks to those who bring light and joy into their lives.

Execution

The church of Solis recognizes this 46 day period as the holiest month of the year. Many parties, ceremonies and other events are held in honor of Solis. Great bonfires are lit at beaches and people sing and dance the night away with plenty of mead. The fires of torches, campfires and lanterns symbolize the strength and glory of the Solis and the heavens.

Participants

The Heavenly Light ritual is a common practice throughout the season of Highsun. This tradition entails that families from villages across Avalon gather together and select another families household to surround with heavenly light. During the night, the family will sneak over to the other home with torches blazing, and place them around the house over the course of the night. the objective is to place 7 torches (One representing each month till Highsun) around the sleeping families home without waking them up. If the family wakes up and comes outside before the 7th torch is placed, the two families welcome each other and sing church hymns together. After the singing the awoken family will kiss the other's foreheads and thank them before going to bed. If the family is not awoken, they will wake up in the morning to burnt out torches and the other family waiting to come inside for a huge breakfast they will have to make on the spot. These traditions are meant to symbolize the way that Solis comes into many villager,s lives and brings joy and stability. If one does not acknowledge the joy they have been given (by not waking up) they will pay dearly for it in the afterlife (the morning after).
