Drow Vanguard

Purpose and Function: The primary purpose of the Drow Vanguard is twofold: to protect the wizard apprentices of Uthryn Baelor1 during their missions and to prevent any attempts at desertion. Given the volatile nature of magical training and the high stakes involved in the Drow's schemes, the Vanguard's role is crucial. They are the shadows that guard the aspiring wizards, ensuring they can perform their tasks without external interference while simultaneously keeping a close watch to prevent any thoughts of rebellion or escape.
  Origins of the Vanguard:
The Drow Vanguard traces its roots back to the Tabaxi Wars, a brutal conflict where the Drow honed their combat skills and developed their ruthless strategies. During the wars, elite Drow warriors were chosen to form a specialized unit tasked with both frontline combat and covert operations. These warriors, selected for their unmatched agility, combat prowess, and unwavering loyalty to Uthryn Baelor and his cause, became known as the Vanguard. Their primary role was to ensure the success of critical missions and to protect high-value targets within the Drow ranks.

Wizard Apprentice Ranking System for the Vanguard:
The protection provided to each apprentice is meticulously calculated based on their potential, achievements, and loyalty to Uthryn Baelor. The ranking system for apprentices determines the number and strength of the Vanguard assigned to them.
  • Shadow Initiates: These are the newcomers who have shown some promise but have yet to prove their worth. They are typically assigned a single Vanguard for protection, enough to guard against minor threats and discourage escape.
  • Umbra Adepts: Apprentices who have demonstrated significant progress and potential are granted increased protection. They might receive two to three Vanguard members, ensuring a higher level of security and vigilance.
  • Nightweaver Magi: Those who have shown exceptional talent and loyalty are afforded the highest level of protection. These apprentices are assigned a full squad of Vanguard, typically four to five members, along with additional support like trained war beasts or magical constructs.
  • Eclipse Savants: Eclipse Savants are the very few elite, casting powerful spells and showing exceptional prowess. Their power is such that they could potentially threaten Baelor himself should they ever show signs of betrayal. They are under constant surveillance by the most skilled Vanguard members, ensuring their safety and loyalty at all costs. The elite apprentices often have an entourage that includes multiple Vanguard, specialized beasts, and even secondary apprentices to assist them.

Uthryn Baelor has kept his Vanguard close throughout many different ages in Eldoria with their origins steeped in the blood of many fallen Tabaxi during the Tabaxi Wars. One thing remaining consistent throughout is the protection of his wizard apprentices at all costs and to prevent any who might falter from fleeing. The level of protection afforded to each apprentice is a direct measure of their value and potential within Baelor's dark designs, ensuring that only the most capable and loyal rise through the ranks.

I like how the vanguard not only protect eclipse servants, but outside threats, but also protect Baelor from the eclipse servants.
