St. Aurilea's Festival (Saint Aw-Rill-E-Uh)
"During the darkest night of the year, look to the skies for my light to guide you home."The festival of St. Aurilea honors the sacrifice of the mage Astor Aurilea of Sveldvar, who gave his life to guide others through the first Ten year storm. In honor of his sacrifice, the gods raised him to saint hood, giving him a constellation in the sky from which his lantern light originates every year.
History
The first The Ten Year Storm occurred without warning or preamble, burying the world in a mountain of snow. Saint Aurilea of Sveldvar was said to climb the highest tower in the capitol and raise his lantern high to channel his magic to the heavens, though it cost him his life. A rainbow of green and purple hue'd light then danced across the sky, giving the people of the world hope. From the ribbons of light, small fairies were birthed to roam the wilds and lead those lost in the storm to safety. The light lasted well past the storm, leading people home and lighting their path through the white painted world.
A festival is held yearly in honor of Saint Aurilea's sacrifice for a full week, held during the second to last week of winter. Over time, the passing on of the story inspired visitors to bring the tradition to their own people. It is one of the few celebrations shared through the known world.
Execution
Lanterns are strung through cities, the flames color changed by mages to emulate the colors painted across the sky each year. Gifts are exchanged by people to represent the gift given by the saint. Often, these are blankets, firewood, extra foodstuffs, toys for small children, or kerchiefs embroidered with the constellation of Aurileas' lantern. A Large feast is held on the last night of the festival. On the years of the storm, the days are spent helping one another prepare for the storm.
Components and tools
Lanterns, food, and gifts are prominent tools of celebration. During this time, many goods are branded or embroidered with the constellation of Aurilea's Lantern.
Participants
Each year before the feast begins, a priest, mage, or important figure head recites the story to the people, taking the time to highlight the importance and gravity of the Saint's sacrifice.
