The Cult of Fir'Tan

"Ever more the world shall know sorrow, for the last of my kin's advances sinks below the sea, the land forever changed, and the great trees never to link again. I am sorry, Great Tiamat, I failed. It was the only way... But I shall make sure that all remember what transpired here. None shall forget the sinking of Atalyn at the claws of Fir'Tan's followers." - Bahamut

Culture

The cult worshipped Fir'Tan himself, often making pilgramages to the Sea of Madness to hear the will of the immortal dragon. His followers believed the world to be Fir'Tan's, stolen from him by rebels and usurpers. Only with His guidance would the world prosper, under his immortal rule would they have ever lasting peace and prosperity. They regularly performed ritual sacrifices of unbelievers to the great dragon, occasionally sacrificing female half dragons as willing brides of their god.

History

The Cult of Fir'Tan rose long, long after his defeat. Based on the island of Talanys during it's hay day. It was founded by the Half Dragon Ke'fel Ne'tarn after an expedition into the Sea of Madness. Ke'fel sought others in Talanys who had heard the same whisperings as he and did not dismiss them. After several more trips to the Sea of Madness, the cult was born, each believing to be chosen agents of Fir'Tan the Immortal who lay trapped somewhere beneath the waves.    The cult began kidnapping young children of human and half dragon origin, subjecting them to indoctrination and the whispers in the sea of madness until they lost the will to resist their master. Adults were also subjected to the whispers, males who did not bend knee executed on the ship deck to feed their dormant master, while females were detained for breeding stock.   As their numbers grew, their crimes escalated. Attacks on trade began, while other members began to supplant themselves into major institutions, such as government, religion, security, and technological research.   Their numbers surged toward the end of Atalyn's days, culminating in one massive push to take the land bridges and their mana pumps. They managed to take most of the bridges, enough to divert the energy for Ke'fel to ascend to immortality like Fir'Tan before him. A series of explosions in the control room chambers created a chain reaction, destroying the bridges and triggering a massive earthquake that split the continents and changed the geographical layout of the world itself. The cult members that survived the explosions did not survive Atalyn's sinking.   Though the cult is now gone, their shadow hangs over history in legend as the destroyer of a great civilization and technology that set the world back by millenia.
