Olgénna Skerry

Olgénna Skerry (/ᴐld͡ʒeɪ̯nnɑ skerriː/, ol-JANE-nah sk-air-ree), also known as The Fire Skerry, The Swelling Island, The Eternal Fire Fountain, or The Charred Isle, is a lone volcanic island in the middle of The Moonspan Ocean, and one of the few volcanoes in the ocean fed by the narrow magmatic hotspot that follows the mid-ocean ridge.   The island, with an slowly-expanding area of 50-square kilometers (19.3 square miles), represents only the tip of the proverbial iceburg (volcano). It sports a population of exactly 0, as no sane, sapient creature wishes to live so close to an active volcano, though there is evidence that there was once a tribe comprised of those who had somehow made their way to the island and got stuck there. The team of Athenaeum Curators that managed to get there and study the ruins believe that they began to worship the volcano and began to view the volcano as a tempermental and uncaring god that eventually consumed them all.

Etymology

The name Olgénna Skerry was coined by a captain from Terror's Landing, who was on an exploratory mission ordered by King Rymhûl, the king of Talnor. They came across the island and the captain named it as such, mixing a Talnoran name (derived from ol 'fire', génna 'mountain') with the Almuran word skerry, which is a reef or rocky island.

Geography

Height and Shape

Olgénna Skerry stands 1,258 meters (4,127.30 ft) above sea level, while possessing the full height of 12,292 meters (40,328.08 ft) if measuring from the sea floor.   The area of the island is 50 sq kms (19.3 sq mi).   As of the present day, there is an active lava lake at the peak that regularily overflows and causes lava rivers to go racing down its slopes to the ocean at random.

Volcano

The volcano of the island is believed to be undergoing near-continuous activity, and perhaps has been 'leaking' lava for the last 1,000 (give or take a few centuries) years, if the ruins found are anything to go by.   Olgénna Skerry leaks more than erupts as lava from its magma chamber continuously fills the lava lake at its peak. Thus, it continuously emits gas and fould smells, as well as regular quakes as the magma chamber empties and refills.   Also, because of the constant emmitance of lava, the volcano and island are constantly expanding, even if the expansion seems incredibly slow and nigh on unnoticable.
