The Summer Garden Theatre
A center of visual arts and fun. A home of the wistful and the artistic.
The Summer Garden Theatre is Thím Gûthuwal's largest independant theatre, and one of the two theatres to be found in the city. It is the home of Director ("Master") Lavender, owner and inheritor (and part time author) of the theatre from the previous owner.
This place had become the home of many misfits and lost souls over the years, either found by the directors or having stumbled across by them in their wanderings. It has become a sort of haven, shutting out the world and the judgements that exists out there, but are non-existent in here.
Purpose / Function
The Summer Garden Theatre is a theatre dedicated to the art of the play, and has been the home of a few troops of actors that take turns on the stage. The most popular plays that are running right now are "The Farmer's Daughter and the Kingdom On the Sea", "An Arguement of Swords", and "An Ode to Erudition".
History
The Summer Garden Theatre was built 143 years (157 EL) before the present by one Gentleman Aemofaer Olzir, a young man that found himself adrift in the world after inheriting a small fortune from a good friend and fellow theatre enjoyer who had recently died from old age.
His friend had always said that he dreamed of starting a theatre in the capital, but always hesitated when it came to whether or not it would actually succeed. There was already a theatre in Thím Gûthuwal, one of the only major buildings in the city that had been upkept during The Sorcerer Queen's reign and had only been mildly vandalized during her downfall. But on his deathbed, Aemo's friend turned to him and urged him to take his money and start a theatre anyway. And so he did.
It turns out that his friend's worries were a bit unfounded. The existing theatre, The Maestoso Hall, was still viewed by some as "cursed", or sullied by the fact that it was one of the Sorcerer Queen's favourite places to be when she wasn't busy making her people miserable. So this lead many to seek out a different venue. Also, since the Summer Garden Theatre was smaller, simpler, than the Maestoso Hall, the tickets were cheaper, and this allowed more of the common folk to enjoy theatre as well.
There were some skirmishes between the people of the Maestoso Hall and the people of the Summer Garden Theatre, but that eventually calmed down when the Maestoso Hall's people realized that the Summer Garden's operation didn't really mess with their attendance rates.
When Aemo grew too old to run the theatre comfortably, he handed the reigns over to his apprentice, Director Eshnaf Ravael, who ran the theatre until his death after a long and protracted illness that took him when he was 72 years old, 30 years after he took up the mantle.
Eshaf had failed to pick a "heir" before he died, so one of the actors, Malckinn Myggûrkor, stepped up (even though he had no idea what he was supposed to do). With his fellow actors' help, he eventually figured out the ins and outs, and he was able to run the theatre for 15 years, when his son, Naul Myggûrkor, stepped up and took over.
Naul Myggûrkor lead the theater for 24 years before an injury forced him to retire. That is when Master Lavender stepped in.
Master Lavender—a man whose first name has never been known by anyone—joined the theater a few years before Naul retired. He joined as a playwright, and "Master Lavender" is his penname.
