WorldEmber 2023 Homework in Eldûra | World Anvil

WorldEmber 2023 Homework

Lighting up my wordforge reminds me of my father's dream to finally have the time and money to build his own real-life forge. Unfortunately, it's been at least three years since he garnered the desire, but his current job has him gone 5 days a week until real late with only two days off.   This is my first WorldEmber, and with how busy my life has become and how stressful previous challenges have been because my free time seems to drop to zero whenever life hears about a challenge I want to do, I'm only going to pledge for the minimum, 10k words. Now, let's see what amazing things I'll forge this December... :3

Week 1: Making the Pledge

This December, I pledge to write at least ten thousand words about the... the... I can't decide, but I'm gonna say Talnor. I misunderstood what I needed to write down on my pledge certificate, so I wrote "Eldûra" before I realized that I'll only be focusing on one area, LOL! I don't really feel like changing it though.   I'm choosing to work on Talnor because that is where a majority of my story ideas take place. And since it's basically the size of the United States in comparison to all of its neighbours (does that make Dazuvell Canada, then? lol), I'll have a lot to work with so I won't accidentally back myself into a writer's block corner.   There's so much I can write about. I can finally write about Thím Guthûwal, the capital of Talnor, expand on why Eldondi is still a vassal state of Talnor, and talk about why the Independent Landgraves would rather implode than act civilly with King Rymhûl despite the fact that he is the reason that the Landgraves exist in the first place.   I have to promise myself that I won't distract myself with map-making again—every challenge that has come along this year has had a prompt that has made me think "this would be enhanced greatly by a good map!" So I end up wasting days on making maps on Inkarnate. You wouldn't believe how much time I wasted on making a map for Cardinal Creek during the summer challenge, and it still isn't finished! At least my parents think it's pretty (the way I sit on the couch in the evening allows them to see the screen while I work on the maps).   I look forward to this challenge despite how busy December usually is. I've begun making the Christmas presents early this year, so hopefully I'll be done before we're too deep into December. Like, I crocheted a car caddy for my bro's birthday but it turned out rather bad (I'm still rather new at crochet) so I found a pattern that I'm going to sew together and send to him and I hope he won't be too confused and disgruntled. I'm also knitting a pair of gloves for a family friend who has been unwell, a pair of socks for him as well (his main joke with me at Small Group when he sees me knitting is "are you knitting me pair of socks?" cheeky guy, lol), and I will be knitting a pair of gloves/wrist warmers for his wife as well. I was going to crochet mug warmers for my neighbours, but I'm still trying to figure how to do that so they're only going to get a platter of cookies this Christmas.   Pray for me—I hope I haven't bit off more than I can chew X3

Week 2:

I have to be honest that I haven't finished the Main Meta of Eldûra yet. I just... I want to make sure its thorough, and neat and tidy. I don't think I'll be making it public until I finish the first of my planned novels, just in case I accidentally reveal some spoilers ;)   So until then, I hope this mini meta will tie (tied? tide?) you over.

Mini Meta of Talnor

a vague guide to what I'll be doing and writing about during WordEmber December...
Genre: Hopepunk, Mid-Fantasy/High-Fantasy (à la The Lord of the Rings), Sword & Sorcery   Scope: The entirety of the Kingdom of Talnor.   Themes: history, trust, freedom, life in a world where the king is kind—while a sect of the nobility looks a gift horse in the mouth.   People: humans and all of their descendant races: dwarves, elves, e'duni, lofocot, and others.   Inspiration:
  • Songs like "The Realm of the Fallen King" by Brunuhville, and epic music of the likes of Eurielle, Clamavi de Profundis, and Two Steps From Hell (I'll link some of the songs down below.
  • Both movie and book versions of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.
  • And a little bit of The Chronicles of Narnia.

Week 3:

So, I spent all of Week 3 working on the CSS of my world in hopes of making it more unique, as what this week's assignment entailed. Little bit overdue since I'm finally writing about what I did to my World Page on the day of Week 4's assignment announcement.   What I did was switch the Timeline, Recent Articles, and Maps widgets around. I made a better blurb under the World Title and made a blurb that now sits between the World Codex and the Maps widgets, though it's not as pretty as I would like (I will have to figure that out someday). I came across a lot of things that didn't want to work when I was messing with the code, but everyone on the WorldAnvil Discord was really helpful, especially with fixing the issue with the blindingly white table background. I still have to work on designing a quote box and I'm not sure how the spoiler button looks since I experimented with an image border....

Week 4:

The prompt for this week is: what I plan to do to keep prepping for WordEmber during this final week of PrepEmber?   When it comes to the prep from now on, all I can think of is to keep doing what I've been doing all month. I've been writing all ideas pertaining to Talnor down in a list because I easily forget about them if I don't. That's all I can think of right now. *shrugs*

I've never heard of Hopepunk before but it sounds great! Have an excellent WorldEmber. :)

Thank you! And I hope you have a great one as well!   (I've just heard about hopepunk recently – and the best example that mostly everyone has heard of is The Lord of the Rings. Hopepunk is just the modern term for a story that's 'for hope')   Thanks for your lovely comment <3

Oh cool! I would not have guessed that Lord of the Rings was hopepunk. I like it! :)   Thank you! :D

Good luck on your journey to 10k! You've got this :D   Which article template(s) are you looking forward to writing the most?

Thanks! Good luck to you, too! It's hard to pinpoint which template I'm most excited to use—two of the Talnor-related articles I have listed on my to-do list are character-related, but the Conditions and the Laws (Natural & Metaphysical) are quite intriguing. I'm excited to see what I can come up with during December :D
